Sura al-Najm 53:18

لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ

la-qad raʾā min āyāti rabbihi l-kubrā

For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest!

Sura al-Najm 53:19

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ

a-fa-raʾaytumu l-lāta wa-l-ʿuzzā

Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza,

Sura al-Najm 53:20

وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ

wa-manāta l-thālithata l-ukhrā

And another, the third (goddess), Manat?

Sura al-Najm 53:21

أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ

a-la-kumu l-dhakaru wa-lahu l-unthā

What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female?

Sura al-Najm 53:22

تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ

tilka idhan qismatun ḍīzā

Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair!

Sura al-Najm 53:23

إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّـهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَٰنٍ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

in hiya illā asmāʾun sammaytumūhā antum wa-ābāukum mā anzala allāhu bihā min sulṭānin in yattabiʿūna illā l-ẓanna wa-mā tahwā l-anfusu wa-la-qad jāʾahum min rrabbihimu l-hudā

These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord!

Sura al-Najm 53:24

أَمْ لِلْإِنسَٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ

am lil-insāni mā tamannā

Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after?
