Surah 2 al-Baqara (The Cow)
RefArabic    TransliterationTranslation
(2:16)

These are they who have bartered Guidance for error: But their traffic is profitless, and they have lost true direction,
(2:61)

And remember ye said: "O Moses! we cannot endure one kind of food (always); so beseech thy Lord for us to produce for us of what the earth groweth, -its pot-herbs, and cucumbers, Its garlic, lentils, and onions." He said: "Will ye exchange the better for the worse? Go ye down to any town, and ye shall find what ye want!" They were covered with humiliation and misery; they drew on themselves the wrath of Allah. This because they went on rejecting the Signs of Allah and slaying His Messengers without just cause. This because they rebelled and went on transgressing.
(2:69)

They said: "Beseech on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us Her colour." He said: "He says: A fawn-coloured heifer, pure and rich in tone, the admiration of beholders!"
(2:71)

He said: "He says: A heifer not trained to till the soil or water the fields; sound and without blemish." They said: "Now hast thou brought the truth." Then they offered her in sacrifice, but not with good-will.
(2:171)

The parable of those who reject Faith is as if one were to shout Like a goat-herd, to things that listen to nothing but calls and cries: Deaf, dumb, and blind, they are void of wisdom.
(2:255)

Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory).
(2:256)

Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.

Or (take) the similitude of one who passed by a hamlet, all in ruins to its roofs. He said: "Oh! how shall Allah bring it (ever) to life, after (this) its death?" but Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again). He said: "How long didst thou tarry (thus)?" He said: (Perhaps) a day or part of a day." He said: "Nay, thou hast tarried thus a hundred years; but look at thy food and thy drink; they show no signs of age; and look at thy donkey: And that We may make of thee a sign unto the people, Look further at the bones, how We bring them together and clothe them with flesh." When this was shown clearly to him, he said: "I know that Allah hath power over all things."
(2:264)

O ye who believe! cancel not your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury,- like those who spend their substance to be seen of men, but believe neither in Allah nor in the Last Day. They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which is a little soil: on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it (Just) a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with aught they have earned. And Allah guideth not those who reject faith.
(2:265)

وَمَثَلُ  ٱلَّذِينَ  يُنفِقُونَ  أَمْوَٰلَهُمُ  ٱبْتِغَآءَ  مَرْضَاتِ  ٱللَّـهِ  وَتَثْبِيتًا  مِّنْ  أَنفُسِهِمْ  كَمَثَلِ  جَنَّةٍۭ  بِرَبْوَةٍ  أَصَابَهَا  وَابِلٌ  فَـَٔاتَتْ  أُكُلَهَا  ضِعْفَيْنِ  فَإِن  لَّمْ  يُصِبْهَا  وَابِلٌ  فَطَلٌّ  وَٱللَّـهُ  بِمَا  تَعْمَلُونَ  بَصِيرٌ wa‑mathalu lladhīna yunfiqūna amwālahumu ibtighāʾa marḍāti allāhi wa‑tathbītan min anfusihim ka‑mathali jannatin bi‑rabwatin aṣābahā wābilun fa‑ātat ukulahā ḍiʿfayni fa‑in lam yuṣibhā wābilun fa‑ṭallun wallāhu bi‑mā taʿmalūna baṣīrun
And the likeness of those who spend their substance, seeking to please Allah and to strengthen their souls, is as a garden, high and fertile: heavy rain falls on it but makes it yield a double increase of harvest, and if it receives not Heavy rain, light moisture sufficeth it. Allah seeth well whatever ye do.

O ye who believe! Give of the good things which ye have (honourably) earned, and of the fruits of the earth which We have produced for you, and do not even aim at getting anything which is bad, in order that out of it ye may give away something, when ye yourselves would not receive it except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of all wants, and worthy of all praise.
(2:273)

(Charity is) for those in need, who, in Allah's cause are restricted (from travel), and cannot move about in the land, seeking (For trade or work): the ignorant man thinks, because of their modesty, that they are free from want. Thou shalt know them by their (Unfailing) mark: They beg not importunately from all the sundry. And whatever of good ye give, be assured Allah knoweth it well.
(2:275)

Those who devour usury will not stand except as stand one whom the Evil one by his touch Hath driven to madness. That is because they say: "Trade is like usury," but Allah hath permitted trade and forbidden usury. Those who after receiving direction from their Lord, desist, shall be pardoned for the past; their case is for Allah (to judge); but those who repeat (The offence) are companions of the Fire: They will abide therein (for ever).

Surah 3 Āl-ʿImrān (The Family of Imran)

O ye who believe! Be not like the Unbelievers, who say of their brethren, when they are travelling through the Earth or engaged in fighting: "If they had stayed with us, they would not have died, or been slain." This that Allah may make it a cause of sighs and regrets in their hearts. It is Allah that gives Life and Death, and Allah sees well all that ye do.

It is part of the Mercy of Allah that thou dost deal gently with them Wert thou severe or harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about thee: so pass over (Their faults), and ask for (Allah's) forgiveness for them; and consult them in affairs (of moment). Then, when thou hast Taken a decision put thy trust in Allah. For Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him).

Surah 4 al-Nisāʾ (The Women)
(4:2)

To orphans restore their property (When they reach their age), nor substitute (your) worthless things for (their) good ones; and devour not their substance (by mixing it up) with your own. For this is indeed a great sin.
(4:3)

وَإِنْ  خِفْتُمْ  أَلَّا  تُقْسِطُوا۟  فِى  ٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ  فَٱنكِحُوا۟  مَا  طَابَ  لَكُم  مِّنَ  ٱلنِّسَآءِ  مَثْنَىٰ  وَثُلَٰثَ  وَرُبَٰعَ  فَإِنْ  خِفْتُمْ  أَلَّا  تَعْدِلُوا۟  فَوَٰحِدَةً  أَوْ  مَا  مَلَكَتْ  أَيْمَٰنُكُمْ  ذَٰلِكَ  أَدْنَىٰٓ  أَلَّا  تَعُولُوا۟ wa‑in khiftum allā tuqsiṭū l‑yatāmā fa‑inkiḥū ṭāba la‑kum mina l‑nisāʾi mathna wa‑thulātha wa‑rubāʿa fa‑in khiftum allā taʿdilū fa‑wāḥidatan aw malakat aymānukum dhālika adnā allā taʿūlū
If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.

Make trial of orphans until they reach the age of marriage; if then ye find sound judgment in them, release their property to them; but consume it not wastefully, nor in haste against their growing up. If the guardian is well-off, Let him claim no remuneration, but if he is poor, let him have for himself what is just and reasonable. When ye release their property to them, take witnesses in their presence: But all-sufficient is Allah in taking account.

When there comes to them some matter touching (Public) safety or fear, they divulge it. If they had only referred it to the Messenger, or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have Tested it from them (direct). Were it not for the Grace and Mercy of Allah unto you, all but a few of you would have fallen into the clutches of Satan.

Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;

O ye who believe! Allah doth but make a trial of you in a little matter of game well within reach of game well within reach of your hands and your lances, that He may test who feareth him unseen: any who transgress thereafter, will have a grievous penalty.
(5:103)

It was not Allah who instituted (superstitions like those of) a slit-ear she-camel, or a she-camel let loose for free pasture, or idol sacrifices for twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed from work: It is blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah; but most of them lack wisdom.

Surah 8 al-Anfāl (The Spoils of War)
(8:7)

وَإِذْ  يَعِدُكُمُ  ٱللَّـهُ  إِحْدَى  ٱلطَّآئِفَتَيْنِ  أَنَّهَا  لَكُمْ  وَتَوَدُّونَ  أَنَّ  غَيْرَ  ذَاتِ  ٱلشَّوْكَةِ  تَكُونُ  لَكُمْ  وَيُرِيدُ  ٱللَّـهُ  أَن  يُحِقَّ  ٱلْحَقَّ  بِكَلِمَٰتِهِۦ  وَيَقْطَعَ  دَابِرَ  ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ wa‑idh yaʿidukumu allāhu iḥda l‑ṭāʾifatayni annahā la‑kum wa‑tawaddūna annā ghayra dhāti l‑shawkati takūnu la‑kum wa‑yurīdu allāhu an yuḥiqqa l‑ḥaqqa bi‑kalimātihi wa‑yaqṭaʿa dābira l‑kāfirīna
Behold! Allah promised you one of the two (enemy) parties, that it should be yours: Ye wished that the one unarmed should be yours, but Allah willed to justify the Truth according to His words and to cut off the roots of the Unbelievers;-
(8:15)

O ye who believe! when ye meet the Unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them.
(8:16)

وَمَن  يُوَلِّهِمْ  يَوْمَئِذٍ  دُبُرَهُۥٓ  إِلَّا  مُتَحَرِّفًا  لِّقِتَالٍ  أَوْ  مُتَحَيِّزًا  إِلَىٰ  فِئَةٍ  فَقَدْ  بَآءَ  بِغَضَبٍ  مِّنَ  ٱللَّـهِ  وَمَأْوَىٰهُ  جَهَنَّمُ  وَبِئْسَ  ٱلْمَصِيرُ wa‑man yuwallihim yawmaʾidhin duburahu illā mutaḥarrifan lliqitālin aw mutaḥayyizan ilā fiʾatin fa‑qad bāʾa bighaḍabin mina allāhi wa‑maʾwāhu jahannamu wa‑biʾsa l‑maṣīru
If any do turn his back to them on such a day - unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own)- he draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and his abode is Hell,- an evil refuge (indeed)!
(8:35)

وَمَا  كَانَ  صَلَاتُهُمْ  عِندَ  ٱلْبَيْتِ  إِلَّا  مُكَآءً  وَتَصْدِيَةً  فَذُوقُوا۟  ٱلْعَذَابَ  بِمَا  كُنتُمْ  تَكْفُرُونَ wa‑mā kāna ṣalātuhum ʿinda l‑bayti illā mukāʾan wa‑taṣdiyatan fa‑dhūqū l‑ʿadhāba bi‑mā kuntum takfurūna
Their prayer at the House (of Allah) is nothing but whistling and clapping of hands: (Its only answer can be), "Taste ye the penalty because ye blasphemed."
(8:57)

فَإِمَّا  تَثْقَفَنَّهُمْ  فِى  ٱلْحَرْبِ  فَشَرِّدْ  بِهِم  مَّنْ  خَلْفَهُمْ  لَعَلَّهُمْ  يَذَّكَّرُونَ fa‑immā tathqafannahum l‑ḥarbi fa‑sharrid bihim man khalfahum la‑ʿallahum yadhdhakkarūna
If ye gain the mastery over them in war, disperse, with them, those who follow them, that they may remember.

Surah 9 al-Tawbah (Repentance)
(9:24)

قُلْ  إِن  كَانَ  ءَابَآؤُكُمْ  وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ  وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ  وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ  وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ  وَأَمْوَٰلٌ  ٱقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا  وَتِجَٰرَةٌ  تَخْشَوْنَ  كَسَادَهَا  وَمَسَٰكِنُ  تَرْضَوْنَهَآ  أَحَبَّ  إِلَيْكُم  مِّنَ  ٱللَّـهِ  وَرَسُولِهِۦ  وَجِهَادٍ  فِى  سَبِيلِهِۦ  فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟  حَتَّىٰ  يَأْتِىَ  ٱللَّـهُ  بِأَمْرِهِۦ  وَٱللَّـهُ  لَا  يَهْدِى  ٱلْقَوْمَ  ٱلْفَٰسِقِينَ qul in kāna ābāʾukum wa‑abnāʾukum waikhwānukum wa‑azwājukum wa‑ʿashīratukum wa‑amwālun iqtaraftumūhā wa‑tijāratun takhshawna kasādahā wa‑masākinu tarḍawnahā aḥabba ilaykum mina allāhi wa‑rasūlihi wa‑jihādin sabīlihi fa‑tarabbaṣū ḥattā yaʾtiya allāhu bi‑amrihi wallāhu yahdī l‑qawma l‑fāsiqīna
Say: If it be that your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your mates, or your kindred; the wealth that ye have gained; the commerce in which ye fear a decline: or the dwellings in which ye delight - are dearer to you than Allah, or His Messenger, or the striving in His cause;- then wait until Allah brings about His decision: and Allah guides not the rebellious.
(9:25)

لَقَدْ  نَصَرَكُمُ  ٱللَّـهُ  فِى  مَوَاطِنَ  كَثِيرَةٍ  وَيَوْمَ  حُنَيْنٍ  إِذْ  أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ  كَثْرَتُكُمْ  فَلَمْ  تُغْنِ  عَنكُمْ  شَيْـًٔا  وَضَاقَتْ  عَلَيْكُمُ  ٱلْأَرْضُ  بِمَا  رَحُبَتْ  ثُمَّ  وَلَّيْتُم  مُّدْبِرِينَ la‑qad naṣarakumu allāhu mawāṭina kathīratin wa‑yawma ḥunaynin idh aʿjabatkum kathratukum falam tughni ʿankum shayʾan wa‑ḍāqat ʿalaykumu l‑arḍu bi‑mā raḥubat thumma wallaytum mudbirīna
Assuredly Allah did help you in many battle-fields and on the day of Hunain: Behold! your great numbers elated you, but they availed you naught: the land, for all that it is wide, did constrain you, and ye turned back in retreat.
(9:28)

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا  ٱلَّذِينَ  ءَامَنُوٓا۟  إِنَّمَا  ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ  نَجَسٌ  فَلَا  يَقْرَبُوا۟  ٱلْمَسْجِدَ  ٱلْحَرَامَ  بَعْدَ  عَامِهِمْ  هَٰذَا  وَإِنْ  خِفْتُمْ  عَيْلَةً  فَسَوْفَ  يُغْنِيكُمُ  ٱللَّـهُ  مِن  فَضْلِهِۦٓ  إِن  شَآءَ  إِنَّ  ٱللَّـهَ  عَلِيمٌ  حَكِيمٌ yā‑ayyuhā lladhīna āmanū innamā l‑mushrikūna najasun fa‑lā yaqrabū l‑masjida l‑ḥarāma baʿda ʿāmihim hādhā wa‑in khiftum ʿaylatan fa‑sawfa yughnīkumu allāhu min faḍlihi in shāʾa inna allāha ʿalīmun ḥakīmun
O ye who believe! Truly the Pagans are unclean; so let them not, after this year of theirs, approach the Sacred Mosque. And if ye fear poverty, soon will Allah enrich you, if He wills, out of His bounty, for Allah is All-knowing, All-wise.
(9:30)

The Jews call 'Uzair a son of Allah, and the Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah's curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth!
(9:35)

On the Day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of Hell, and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, their flanks, and their backs.- "This is the (treasure) which ye buried for yourselves: taste ye, then, the (treasures) ye buried!"
(9:46)

وَلَوْ  أَرَادُوا۟  ٱلْخُرُوجَ  لَأَعَدُّوا۟  لَهُۥ  عُدَّةً  وَلَٰكِن  كَرِهَ  ٱللَّـهُ  ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمْ  فَثَبَّطَهُمْ  وَقِيلَ  ٱقْعُدُوا۟  مَعَ  ٱلْقَٰعِدِينَ wa‑law arādū l‑khurūja la‑aʿaddū lahu ʿuddatan wa‑lākin kariha allāhu inbiʿāthahum fa‑thabbaṭahum wa‑qīla iqʿudū maʿa l‑qāʿidīna
If they had intended to come out, they would certainly have made some preparation therefor; but Allah was averse to their being sent forth; so He made them lag behind, and they were told, "Sit ye among those who sit (inactive)."
