Surah 6 al-Anʿām (The Cattle)
RefArabic    TransliterationTranslation
(6:7)

وَلَوْ  نَزَّلْنَا  عَلَيْكَ  كِتَٰبًا  فِى  قِرْطَاسٍ  فَلَمَسُوهُ  بِأَيْدِيهِمْ  لَقَالَ  ٱلَّذِينَ  كَفَرُوٓا۟  إِنْ  هَٰذَآ  إِلَّا  سِحْرٌ  مُّبِينٌ wa‑law nazzalnā ʿalayka kitāban qirṭāsin fa‑lamasūhu bi‑aydīhim la‑qāla lladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā siḥrun mubīnun
If We had sent unto thee a written (message) on parchment, so that they could touch it with their hands, the Unbelievers would have been sure to say: "This is nothing but obvious magic!"

Leave alone those who take their religion to be mere play and amusement, and are deceived by the life of this world. But proclaim (to them) this (truth): that every soul delivers itself to ruin by its own acts: it will find for itself no protector or intercessor except Allah: if it offered every ransom, (or reparation), none will be accepted: such is (the end of) those who deliver themselves to ruin by their own acts: they will have for drink (only) boiling water, and for punishment, one most grievous: for they persisted in rejecting Allah.
(6:71)

Say: "Shall we indeed call on others besides Allah,- things that can do us neither good nor harm,- and turn on our heels after receiving guidance from Allah? - like one whom the evil ones have made into a fool, wandering bewildered through the earth, his friends calling, come to us', (vainly) guiding him to the path." Say: "Allah's guidance is the (only) guidance, and we have been directed to submit ourselves to the Lord of the worlds;-

No just estimate of Allah do they make when they say: "Nothing doth Allah send down to man (by way of revelation)" Say: "Who then sent down the Book which Moses brought?- a light and guidance to man: But ye make it into (separate) sheets for show, while ye conceal much (of its contents): therein were ye taught that which ye knew not- neither ye nor your fathers." Say: "Allah (sent it down)": Then leave them to plunge in vain discourse and trifling.

It is Allah Who causeth the seed-grain and the date-stone to split and sprout. He causeth the living to issue from the dead, and He is the one to cause the dead to issue from the living. That is Allah: then how are ye deluded away from the truth?

It is He Who sendeth down rain from the skies: with it We produce vegetation of all kinds: from some We produce green (crops), out of which We produce grain, heaped up (at harvest); out of the date-palm and its sheaths (or spathes) (come) clusters of dates hanging low and near: and (then there are) gardens of grapes, and olives, and pomegranates, each similar (in kind) yet different (in variety): when they begin to bear fruit, feast your eyes with the fruit and the ripeness thereof. Behold! in these things there are signs for people who believe.

Surah 7 al-Aʿrāf (The Heights)
(7:18)

Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He draweth the night as a veil o'er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds!

From the land that is clean and good, by the will of its Cherisher, springs up produce, (rich) after its kind: but from the land that is bad, springs up nothing but that which is niggardly: thus do we explain the signs by various (symbols) to those who are grateful.

So We sent (plagues) on them: Wholesale death, Locusts, Lice, Frogs, And Blood: Signs openly self-explained: but they were steeped in arrogance,- a people given to sin.

When Moses came back to his people, angry and grieved, he said: "Evil it is that ye have done in my place in my absence: did ye make haste to bring on the judgment of your Lord?" He put down the tablets, seized his brother by (the hair of) his head, and dragged him to him. Aaron said: "Son of my mother! the people did indeed reckon me as naught, and went near to slaying me! Make not the enemies rejoice over my misfortune, nor count thou me amongst the people of sin."

When the anger of Moses was appeased, he took up the tablets: in the writing thereon was guidance and Mercy for such as fear their Lord.

We divided them into twelve tribes or nations. We directed Moses by inspiration, when his (thirsty) people asked him for water: "Strike the rock with thy staff": out of it there gushed forth twelve springs: Each group knew its own place for water. We gave them the shade of clouds, and sent down to them manna and quails, (saying): "Eat of the good things We have provided for you": (but they rebelled); to Us they did no harm, but they harmed their own souls.

وَلَوْ  شِئْنَا  لَرَفَعْنَٰهُ  بِهَا  وَلَٰكِنَّهُۥٓ  أَخْلَدَ  إِلَى  ٱلْأَرْضِ  وَٱتَّبَعَ  هَوَىٰهُ  فَمَثَلُهُۥ  كَمَثَلِ  ٱلْكَلْبِ  إِن  تَحْمِلْ  عَلَيْهِ  يَلْهَثْ  أَوْ  تَتْرُكْهُ  يَلْهَث  ذَّٰلِكَ  مَثَلُ  ٱلْقَوْمِ  ٱلَّذِينَ  كَذَّبُوا۟  بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا  فَٱقْصُصِ  ٱلْقَصَصَ  لَعَلَّهُمْ  يَتَفَكَّرُونَ wa‑law shiʾnā la‑rafaʿnāhu bihā wa‑lā‑kinnahu akhlada ilā l‑arḍi wa‑ittabaʿa hawahu fa‑mathaluhu ka‑mathali l‑kalbi in taḥmil ʿalayhi yalhath aw tatrukhu yalhath dhālika mathalu l‑qawmi lladhīna kadhdhabū bi‑āyātinā fa‑iqṣuṣi l‑qaṣaṣa la‑ʿallahum yatafakkarūna
If it had been Our will, We should have elevated him with Our signs; but he inclined to the earth, and followed his own vain desires. His similitude is that of a dog: if you attack him, he lolls out his tongue, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls out his tongue. That is the similitude of those who reject Our signs; So relate the story; perchance they may reflect.
(7:193)

وَإِن  تَدْعُوهُمْ  إِلَى  ٱلْهُدَىٰ  لَا  يَتَّبِعُوكُمْ  سَوَآءٌ  عَلَيْكُمْ  أَدَعَوْتُمُوهُمْ  أَمْ  أَنتُمْ  صَٰمِتُونَ wa‑in tadʿūhum ilā l‑hudā yattabiʿūkum sawāʾun ʿalaykum adaʿawtumūhum am antum ṣāmitūna
If ye call them to guidance, they will not obey: For you it is the same whether ye call them or ye hold your peace!

Surah 11 Hūd (Hud)
(11:31)

وَلَآ  أَقُولُ  لَكُمْ  عِندِى  خَزَآئِنُ  ٱللَّـهِ  وَلَآ  أَعْلَمُ  ٱلْغَيْبَ  وَلَآ  أَقُولُ  إِنِّى  مَلَكٌ  وَلَآ  أَقُولُ  لِلَّذِينَ  تَزْدَرِىٓ  أَعْيُنُكُمْ  لَن  يُؤْتِيَهُمُ  ٱللَّـهُ  خَيْرًا  ٱللَّـهُ  أَعْلَمُ  بِمَا  فِىٓ  أَنفُسِهِمْ  إِنِّىٓ  إِذًا  لَّمِنَ  ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ wa‑lā aqūlu la‑kum ʿindī khazāʾinu allāhi wa‑lā aʿlamu l‑ghayba wa‑lā aqūlu innī malakun wa‑lā aqūlu li‑lladhīna tazdarī aʿyunukum lan yuʾtiyahumu allāhu khayran allāhu aʿlamu bi‑mā anfusihim innī idhan la‑mina l‑ẓālimīna
"I tell you not that with me are the treasures of Allah, nor do I know what is hidden, nor claim I to be an angel. Nor yet do I say, of those whom your eyes do despise that Allah will not grant them (all) that is good: Allah knoweth best what is in their souls: I should, if I did, indeed be a wrong-doer."
(11:44)

Then the word went forth: "O earth! swallow up thy water, and O sky! Withhold (thy rain)!" and the water abated, and the matter was ended. The Ark rested on Mount Judi, and the word went forth: "Away with those who do wrong!"
(11:69)

وَلَقَدْ  جَآءَتْ  رُسُلُنَآ  إِبْرَٰهِيمَ  بِٱلْبُشْرَىٰ  قَالُوا۟  سَلَٰمًا  قَالَ  سَلَٰمٌ  فَمَا  لَبِثَ  أَن  جَآءَ  بِعِجْلٍ  حَنِيذٍ wa‑la‑qad jāʾat rusulunā ibrāhīma bil‑bushra qālū salāman qalā salāmun fa‑mā labitha an jāa bi‑ʿijlin ḥanīdhin
There came Our messengers to Abraham with glad tidings. They said, "Peace!" He answered, "Peace!" and hastened to entertain them with a roasted calf.
(11:74)

فَلَمَّا  ذَهَبَ  عَنْ  إِبْرَٰهِيمَ  ٱلرَّوْعُ  وَجَآءَتْهُ  ٱلْبُشْرَىٰ  يُجَٰدِلُنَا  فِى  قَوْمِ  لُوطٍ fa‑lammā dhahaba ʿan ibrāhīma l‑rawʿu wa‑jāathu l‑bushrā yujādilunā qawmi lūṭin
When fear had passed from (the mind of) Abraham and the glad tidings had reached him, he began to plead with us for Lut's people.
(11:99)

And they are followed by a curse in this (life) and on the Day of Judgment: and woeful is the gift which shall be given (unto them)!
(11:105)

The day it arrives, no soul shall speak except by His leave: of those (gathered) some will be wretched and some will be blessed.
(11:108)

وَأَمَّا  ٱلَّذِينَ  سُعِدُوا۟  فَفِى  ٱلْجَنَّةِ  خَٰلِدِينَ  فِيهَا  مَا  دَامَتِ  ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ  وَٱلْأَرْضُ  إِلَّا  مَا  شَآءَ  رَبُّكَ  عَطَآءً  غَيْرَ  مَجْذُوذٍ wa‑ammā lladhīna suʿidū fa‑fī l‑jannati khālidīna fīhā dāmati l‑samāwātu wa‑l‑arḍu illā shāʾa rabbuka ʿaṭāʾan ghayra majdhūdhin
And those who are blessed shall be in the Garden: They will dwell therein for all the time that the heavens and the earth endure, except as thy Lord willeth: a gift without break.

Surah 12 Yūsuf (Joseph)
(12:9)

"Slay ye Joseph or cast him out to some (unknown) land, that so the favour of your father may be given to you alone: (there will be time enough) for you to be righteous after that!"
(12:10)

قَالَ  قَآئِلٌ  مِّنْهُمْ  لَا  تَقْتُلُوا۟  يُوسُفَ  وَأَلْقُوهُ  فِى  غَيَٰبَتِ  ٱلْجُبِّ  يَلْتَقِطْهُ  بَعْضُ  ٱلسَّيَّارَةِ  إِن  كُنتُمْ  فَٰعِلِينَ qalā qāʾilun minhum taqtulū yūsufa wa‑alqūhu ghayābati l‑jubbi yaltaqiṭhu baʿḍu l‑sayyārati in kuntum fāʿilīna
Said one of them: "Slay not Joseph, but if ye must do something, throw him down to the bottom of the well: he will be picked up by some caravan of travellers."
(12:12)

"Send him with us tomorrow to enjoy himself and play, and we shall take every care of him."
(12:13)

قَالَ  إِنِّى  لَيَحْزُنُنِىٓ  أَن  تَذْهَبُوا۟  بِهِۦ  وَأَخَافُ  أَن  يَأْكُلَهُ  ٱلذِّئْبُ  وَأَنتُمْ  عَنْهُ  غَٰفِلُونَ qalā innī layaḥzununī an tadhhabū bihi wa‑akhāfu an yakulahu l‑dhiʾbu wa‑antum ʿanhu ghāfilūna
(Jacob) said: "Really it saddens me that ye should take him away: I fear lest the wolf should devour him while ye attend not to him."
(12:14)

They said: "If the wolf were to devour him while we are (so large) a party, then should we indeed (first) have perished ourselves!"
(12:15)

فَلَمَّا  ذَهَبُوا۟  بِهِۦ  وَأَجْمَعُوٓا۟  أَن  يَجْعَلُوهُ  فِى  غَيَٰبَتِ  ٱلْجُبِّ  وَأَوْحَيْنَآ  إِلَيْهِ  لَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُم  بِأَمْرِهِمْ  هَٰذَا  وَهُمْ  لَا  يَشْعُرُونَ fa‑lammā dhahabū bihi wa‑ajmaʿū an yajʿalūhu ghayābati l‑jubbi wa‑awḥaynā ilayhi la‑tunabbiʾannahum bi‑amrihim hādhā wa‑hum yashʿurūna
So they did take him away, and they all agreed to throw him down to the bottom of the well: and We put into his heart (this Message): 'Of a surety thou shalt (one day) tell them the truth of this their affair while they know (thee) not'
(12:17)

They said: "O our father! We went racing with one another, and left Joseph with our things; and the wolf devoured him.... But thou wilt never believe us even though we tell the truth."
(12:18)

They stained his shirt with false blood. He said: "Nay, but your minds have made up a tale (that may pass) with you, (for me) patience is most fitting: Against that which ye assert, it is Allah (alone) Whose help can be sought"..
(12:20)

The (Brethren) sold him for a miserable price, for a few dirhams counted out: in such low estimation did they hold him!
(12:23)

وَرَٰوَدَتْهُ  ٱلَّتِى  هُوَ  فِى  بَيْتِهَا  عَن  نَّفْسِهِۦ  وَغَلَّقَتِ  ٱلْأَبْوَٰبَ  وَقَالَتْ  هَيْتَ  لَكَ  قَالَ  مَعَاذَ  ٱللَّـهِ  إِنَّهُۥ  رَبِّىٓ  أَحْسَنَ  مَثْوَاىَ  إِنَّهُۥ  لَا  يُفْلِحُ  ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ wa‑rāwadathu allatī huwa baytihā ʿan nafsihi wa‑ghallaqati l‑abwāba wa‑qālat hayta la‑ka qalā maʿādha allāhi innahu rabbī aḥsana mathwāya innahu yufliḥu l‑ẓālimūna
But she in whose house he was, sought to seduce him from his (true) self: she fastened the doors, and said: "Now come, thou (dear one)!" He said: "Allah forbid! truly (thy husband) is my lord! he made my sojourn agreeable! truly to no good come those who do wrong!"
(12:25)

وَٱسْتَبَقَا  ٱلْبَابَ  وَقَدَّتْ  قَمِيصَهُۥ  مِن  دُبُرٍ  وَأَلْفَيَا  سَيِّدَهَا  لَدَا  ٱلْبَابِ  قَالَتْ  مَا  جَزَآءُ  مَنْ  أَرَادَ  بِأَهْلِكَ  سُوٓءًا  إِلَّآ  أَن  يُسْجَنَ  أَوْ  عَذَابٌ  أَلِيمٌ wa‑astabaqā l‑bāba wa‑qaddat qamīṣahu min duburin wa‑alfayā sayyidahā ladā l‑bābi qālat jazāʾu man arāda bi‑ahlika sūʾan illā an yusjana aw ʿadhābun alīmun
So they both raced each other to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back: they both found her lord near the door. She said: "What is the (fitting) punishment for one who formed an evil design against thy wife, but prison or a grievous chastisement?"
(12:26)

قَالَ  هِىَ  رَٰوَدَتْنِى  عَن  نَّفْسِى  وَشَهِدَ  شَاهِدٌ  مِّنْ  أَهْلِهَآ  إِن  كَانَ  قَمِيصُهُۥ  قُدَّ  مِن  قُبُلٍ  فَصَدَقَتْ  وَهُوَ  مِنَ  ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ qalā hiya rāwadatnī ʿan nnafsī wa‑shahida shāhidun min ahlihā in kāna qamīṣuhu qudda min qubulin fa‑ṣadaqat wa‑huwa mina l‑kādhibīna
He said: "It was she that sought to seduce me - from my (true) self." And one of her household saw (this) and bore witness, (thus):- "If it be that his shirt is rent from the front, then is her tale true, and he is a liar!
(12:27)

وَإِن  كَانَ  قَمِيصُهُۥ  قُدَّ  مِن  دُبُرٍ  فَكَذَبَتْ  وَهُوَ  مِنَ  ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ wa‑in kāna qamīṣuhu qudda min duburin fa‑kadhabat wa‑huwa mina l‑ṣādiqīna
"But if it be that his shirt is torn from the back, then is she the liar, and he is telling the truth!"
(12:28)

So when he saw his shirt,- that it was torn at the back,- (her husband) said: "Behold! It is a snare of you women! truly, mighty is your snare!
(12:30)

وَقَالَ  نِسْوَةٌ  فِى  ٱلْمَدِينَةِ  ٱمْرَأَتُ  ٱلْعَزِيزِ  تُرَٰوِدُ  فَتَىٰهَا  عَن  نَّفْسِهِۦ  قَدْ  شَغَفَهَا  حُبًّا  إِنَّا  لَنَرَىٰهَا  فِى  ضَلَٰلٍ  مُّبِينٍ wa‑qāla niswatun l‑madīnati imraʾatu l‑ʿazīzi turāwidu fatahā ʿan nafsihi qad shaghafahā ḥubban innā la‑narāhā ḍalālin mubīnin
Ladies said in the City: "The wife of the (great) 'Aziz is seeking to seduce her slave from his (true) self: Truly hath he inspired her with violent love: we see she is evidently going astray."
(12:31)

فَلَمَّا  سَمِعَتْ  بِمَكْرِهِنَّ  أَرْسَلَتْ  إِلَيْهِنَّ  وَأَعْتَدَتْ  لَهُنَّ  مُتَّكَـًٔا  وَءَاتَتْ  كُلَّ  وَٰحِدَةٍ  مِّنْهُنَّ  سِكِّينًا  وَقَالَتِ  ٱخْرُجْ  عَلَيْهِنَّ  فَلَمَّا  رَأَيْنَهُۥٓ  أَكْبَرْنَهُۥ  وَقَطَّعْنَ  أَيْدِيَهُنَّ  وَقُلْنَ  حَٰشَ  لِلَّـهِ  مَا  هَٰذَا  بَشَرًا  إِنْ  هَٰذَآ  إِلَّا  مَلَكٌ  كَرِيمٌ fa‑lammā samiʿat bimakrihinna arsalat ilayhinna wa‑aʿtadat la‑hunna muttakaʾan wa‑ātat kulla wāḥidatin minhunna sikkīnan wa‑qālati ikhruj ʿalayhinna fa‑lammā raaynahu akbarnahu wa‑qaṭṭaʿna aydiyahunna wa‑qulna ḥāsha lillāhi hādhā basharan in hādhā illā malakun karīmun
When she heard of their malicious talk, she sent for them and prepared a banquet for them: she gave each of them a knife: and she said (to Joseph), "Come out before them." When they saw him, they did extol him, and (in their amazement) cut their hands: they said, "Allah preserve us! no mortal is this! this is none other than a noble angel!"
(12:36)

وَدَخَلَ  مَعَهُ  ٱلسِّجْنَ  فَتَيَانِ  قَالَ  أَحَدُهُمَآ  إِنِّىٓ  أَرَىٰنِىٓ  أَعْصِرُ  خَمْرًا  وَقَالَ  ٱلْأَخَرُ  إِنِّىٓ  أَرَىٰنِىٓ  أَحْمِلُ  فَوْقَ  رَأْسِى  خُبْزًا  تَأْكُلُ  ٱلطَّيْرُ  مِنْهُ  نَبِّئْنَا  بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓ  إِنَّا  نَرَىٰكَ  مِنَ  ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ wa‑dakhala maʿahu l‑sijna fatayāni qalā aḥaduhumā innī aranī aʿṣiru khamran wa‑qāla l‑akharu innī aranī aḥmilu fawqa rasī khubzan taʾkulu l‑ṭayru minhu nabbinā bi‑taʾwīlihi innā naraka mina l‑muḥsinīna
Now with him there came into the prison two young men. Said one of them: "I see myself (in a dream) pressing wine." said the other: "I see myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head, and birds are eating, thereof." "Tell us" (they said) "The truth and meaning thereof: for we see thou art one that doth good (to all)."
(12:43)

وَقَالَ  ٱلْمَلِكُ  إِنِّىٓ  أَرَىٰ  سَبْعَ  بَقَرَٰتٍ  سِمَانٍ  يَأْكُلُهُنَّ  سَبْعٌ  عِجَافٌ  وَسَبْعَ  سُنۢبُلَٰتٍ  خُضْرٍ  وَأُخَرَ  يَابِسَٰتٍ  يَٰٓأَيُّهَا  ٱلْمَلَأُ  أَفْتُونِى  فِى  رُءْيَٰىَ  إِن  كُنتُمْ  لِلرُّءْيَا  تَعْبُرُونَ wa‑qāla l‑maliku innī ara sabʿa baqarātin simānin yaʾkuluhunna sabʿun ʿijāfun wa‑sabʿa sunbulātin khuḍrin wa‑ukhara yābisātin yā‑ayyuhā l‑malaʾu aftūnī ruʾyāya in kuntum lil‑ruʾyā taʿburūna
The king (of Egypt) said: "I do see (in a vision) seven fat kine, whom seven lean ones devour, and seven green ears of corn, and seven (others) withered. O ye chiefs! Expound to me my vision if it be that ye can interpret visions."
(12:46)

(12:51)

(The king) said (to the ladies): "What was your affair when ye did seek to seduce Joseph from his (true) self?" The ladies said: "Allah preserve us! no evil know we against him!" Said the 'Aziz's wife: "Now is the truth manifest (to all): it was I who sought to seduce him from his (true) self: He is indeed of those who are (ever) true (and virtuous).
