Surah 4 al-Nisāʾ (The Women)
RefArabic    TransliterationTranslation
(4:107)

Contend not on behalf of such as betray their own souls; for Allah loveth not one given to perfidy and crime:
(4:109)

هَٰٓأَنتُمْ  هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ  جَٰدَلْتُمْ  عَنْهُمْ  فِى  ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ  ٱلدُّنْيَا  فَمَن  يُجَٰدِلُ  ٱللَّـهَ  عَنْهُمْ  يَوْمَ  ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ  أَم  مَّن  يَكُونُ  عَلَيْهِمْ  وَكِيلًا hā‑antum hāʾulāʾi jādaltum ʿanhum l‑ḥayāti l‑dunyā fa‑man yujādilu allāha ʿanhum yawma l‑qiyāmati am man yakūnu ʿalayhim wakīlan
Ah! These are the sort of men on whose behalf ye may contend in this world; but who will contend with Allah on their behalf on the Day of Judgment, or who will carry their affairs through?

Surah 6 al-Anʿām (The Cattle)
(6:25)

وَمِنْهُم  مَّن  يَسْتَمِعُ  إِلَيْكَ  وَجَعَلْنَا  عَلَىٰ  قُلُوبِهِمْ  أَكِنَّةً  أَن  يَفْقَهُوهُ  وَفِىٓ  ءَاذَانِهِمْ  وَقْرًا  وَإِن  يَرَوْا۟  كُلَّ  ءَايَةٍ  لَّا  يُؤْمِنُوا۟  بِهَا  حَتَّىٰٓ  إِذَا  جَآءُوكَ  يُجَٰدِلُونَكَ  يَقُولُ  ٱلَّذِينَ  كَفَرُوٓا۟  إِنْ  هَٰذَآ  إِلَّآ  أَسَٰطِيرُ  ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ wa‑minhum man yastamiʿu ilayka wa‑jaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wa‑fī ādhānihim waqran wa‑in yaraw kulla āyatin yuʾminū bihā ḥatta idhā jāʾūka yujādilūnaka yaqūlu lladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā asāṭīru l‑awwalīna
Of them there are some who (pretend to) listen to thee; but We have thrown veils on their hearts, So they understand it not, and deafness in their ears; if they saw every one of the signs, not they will believe in them; in so much that when they come to thee, they (but) dispute with thee; the Unbelievers say: "These are nothing but tales of the ancients."
(6:121)

وَلَا  تَأْكُلُوا۟  مِمَّا  لَمْ  يُذْكَرِ  ٱسْمُ  ٱللَّـهِ  عَلَيْهِ  وَإِنَّهُۥ  لَفِسْقٌ  وَإِنَّ  ٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ  لَيُوحُونَ  إِلَىٰٓ  أَوْلِيَآئِهِمْ  لِيُجَٰدِلُوكُمْ  وَإِنْ  أَطَعْتُمُوهُمْ  إِنَّكُمْ  لَمُشْرِكُونَ wa‑lā taʾkulū mimmā lam yudhkari smu allāhi ʿalayhi wa‑innahu la‑fisqun wa‑inna l‑shayāṭīna la‑yūḥūna ila awliyāʾihim li‑yujādilūkum wa‑in aṭaʿtumūhum innakum la‑mushrikūna
Eat not of (meats) on which Allah's name hath not been pronounced: That would be impiety. But the evil ones ever inspire their friends to contend with you if ye were to obey them, ye would indeed be Pagans.

Surah 7 al-Aʿrāf (The Heights)
(7:71)

قَالَ  قَدْ  وَقَعَ  عَلَيْكُم  مِّن  رَّبِّكُمْ  رِجْسٌ  وَغَضَبٌ  أَتُجَٰدِلُونَنِى  فِىٓ  أَسْمَآءٍ  سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ  أَنتُمْ  وَءَابَآؤُكُم  مَّا  نَزَّلَ  ٱللَّـهُ  بِهَا  مِن  سُلْطَٰنٍ  فَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟  إِنِّى  مَعَكُم  مِّنَ  ٱلْمُنتَظِرِينَ qalā qad waqaʿa ʿalaykum min rabbikum rijsun wa‑ghaḍabun a‑tujādilūnanī asmāʾin sammaytumūhā antum wa‑ābāukum nazzala allāhu bihā min sulṭānin fa‑intaẓirū innī maʿakum mina l‑muntaẓirīna
He said: "Punishment and wrath have already come upon you from your Lord: dispute ye with me over names which ye have devised - ye and your fathers,- without authority from Allah? then wait: I am amongst you, also waiting."

Surah 11 Hūd (Hud)
(11:32)

قَالُوا۟  يَٰنُوحُ  قَدْ  جَٰدَلْتَنَا  فَأَكْثَرْتَ  جِدَٰلَنَا  فَأْتِنَا  بِمَا  تَعِدُنَآ  إِن  كُنتَ  مِنَ  ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ qālū yānūḥu qad jādaltanā fa‑aktharta jidālanā fa‑ʾtinā bi‑mā taʿidunā in kunta mina l‑ṣādiqīna

(11:74)

فَلَمَّا  ذَهَبَ  عَنْ  إِبْرَٰهِيمَ  ٱلرَّوْعُ  وَجَآءَتْهُ  ٱلْبُشْرَىٰ  يُجَٰدِلُنَا  فِى  قَوْمِ  لُوطٍ fa‑lammā dhahaba ʿan ibrāhīma l‑rawʿu wa‑jāathu l‑bushrā yujādilunā qawmi lūṭin

وَيُسَبِّحُ  ٱلرَّعْدُ  بِحَمْدِهِۦ  وَٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ  مِنْ  خِيفَتِهِۦ  وَيُرْسِلُ  ٱلصَّوَٰعِقَ  فَيُصِيبُ  بِهَا  مَن  يَشَآءُ  وَهُمْ  يُجَٰدِلُونَ  فِى  ٱللَّـهِ  وَهُوَ  شَدِيدُ  ٱلْمِحَالِ wa‑yusabbiḥu l‑raʿdu bi‑ḥamdihi wa‑l‑malāʾikatu min khīfatihi wa‑yursilu l‑ṣawāʿiqa fa‑yuṣību bihā man yashāʾu wa‑hum yujādilūna allāhi wa‑huwa shadīdu l‑miḥāli
Nay, thunder repeateth His praises, and so do the angels, with awe: He flingeth the loud-voiced thunder-bolts, and therewith He striketh whomsoever He will..yet these (are the men) who (dare to) dispute about Allah, with the strength of His power (supreme)!

Surah 16 al-Naḥl (The Bee)
(16:125)

ٱدْعُ  إِلَىٰ  سَبِيلِ  رَبِّكَ  بِٱلْحِكْمَةِ  وَٱلْمَوْعِظَةِ  ٱلْحَسَنَةِ  وَجَٰدِلْهُم  بِٱلَّتِى  هِىَ  أَحْسَنُ  إِنَّ  رَبَّكَ  هُوَ  أَعْلَمُ  بِمَن  ضَلَّ  عَن  سَبِيلِهِۦ  وَهُوَ  أَعْلَمُ  بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ idʿu ilā sabīli rabbika bil‑ḥikmati wa‑l‑mawʿiẓati l‑ḥasanati wa‑jādilhum billatī hiya aḥsanu inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman ḍalla ʿan sabīlihi wa‑huwa aʿlamu bil‑muhtadīna
Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance.

Surah 18 al-Kahf (The Cave)
(18:56)

We only send the messengers to give Glad Tidings and to give warnings: But the unbelievers dispute with vain argument, in order therewith to weaken the truth, and they treat My Signs as a jest, as also the fact that they are warned!

Surah 22 al-Ḥajj (The Pilgrimage)
(22:3)

وَمِنَ  ٱلنَّاسِ  مَن  يُجَٰدِلُ  فِى  ٱللَّـهِ  بِغَيْرِ  عِلْمٍ  وَيَتَّبِعُ  كُلَّ  شَيْطَٰنٍ  مَّرِيدٍ wa‑mina l‑nāsi man yujādilu allāhi bi‑ghayri ʿilmin wa‑yattabiʿu kulla shayṭānin marīdin
And yet among men there are such as dispute about Allah, without knowledge, and follow every evil one obstinate in rebellion!
(22:8)

وَمِنَ  ٱلنَّاسِ  مَن  يُجَٰدِلُ  فِى  ٱللَّـهِ  بِغَيْرِ  عِلْمٍ  وَلَا  هُدًى  وَلَا  كِتَٰبٍ  مُّنِيرٍ wa‑mina l‑nāsi man yujādilu allāhi bi‑ghayri ʿilmin wa‑lā hudan wa‑lā kitābin munīrin
Yet there is among men such a one as disputes about Allah, without Knowledge, without Guidance, and without a Book of Enlightenment,-
(22:68)

وَإِن  جَٰدَلُوكَ  فَقُلِ  ٱللَّـهُ  أَعْلَمُ  بِمَا  تَعْمَلُونَ wa‑in jādalūka faquli allāhu aʿlamu bi‑mā taʿmalūna
If they do wrangle with thee, say, "Allah knows best what it is ye are doing."

Surah 29 al-ʿAnkabūt (The Spider)
(29:46)

And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, "We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam)."

Surah 31 Luqmān (Lukman)
(31:20)

أَلَمْ  تَرَوْا۟  أَنَّ  ٱللَّـهَ  سَخَّرَ  لَكُم  مَّا  فِى  ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ  وَمَا  فِى  ٱلْأَرْضِ  وَأَسْبَغَ  عَلَيْكُمْ  نِعَمَهُۥ  ظَٰهِرَةً  وَبَاطِنَةً  وَمِنَ  ٱلنَّاسِ  مَن  يُجَٰدِلُ  فِى  ٱللَّـهِ  بِغَيْرِ  عِلْمٍ  وَلَا  هُدًى  وَلَا  كِتَٰبٍ  مُّنِيرٍ a‑lam taraw annā allāha sakhkhara la‑kum l‑samāwāti wa‑mā l‑arḍi wa‑asbagha ʿalaykum niʿamahu ẓāhiratan wa‑bāṭinatan wa‑mina l‑nāsi man yujādilu allāhi bi‑ghayri ʿilmin wa‑lā hudan wa‑lā kitābin munīrin
Do ye not see that Allah has subjected to your (use) all things in the heavens and on earth, and has made his bounties flow to you in exceeding measure, (both) seen and unseen? Yet there are among men those who dispute about Allah, without knowledge and without guidance, and without a Book to enlighten them!

Surah 40 al-Ghāfir (The Forgiving One)
(40:4)

None can dispute about the Signs of Allah but the Unbelievers. Let not, then, their strutting about through the land deceive thee!
(40:5)

But (there were people) before them, who denied (the Signs),- the People of Noah, and the Confederates (of Evil) after them; and every People plotted against their prophet, to seize him, and disputed by means of vanities, therewith to condemn the Truth; but it was I that seized them! and how (terrible) was My Requital!
(40:35)

"(Such) as dispute about the Signs of Allah, without any authority that hath reached them, grievous and odious (is such conduct) in the sight of Allah and of the Believers. Thus doth Allah, seal up every heart - of arrogant and obstinate Transgressors."
(40:56)

إِنَّ  ٱلَّذِينَ  يُجَٰدِلُونَ  فِىٓ  ءَايَٰتِ  ٱللَّـهِ  بِغَيْرِ  سُلْطَٰنٍ  أَتَىٰهُمْ  إِن  فِى  صُدُورِهِمْ  إِلَّا  كِبْرٌ  مَّا  هُم  بِبَٰلِغِيهِ  فَٱسْتَعِذْ  بِٱللَّـهِ  إِنَّهُۥ  هُوَ  ٱلسَّمِيعُ  ٱلْبَصِيرُ inna lladhīna yujādilūna āyāti allāhi bi‑ghayri sulṭānin atāhum in ṣudūrihim illā kibrun hum bi‑bālighīhi fa‑istaʿidh billāhi innahu huwa l‑samīʿu l‑baṣīru
Those who dispute about the signs of Allah without any authority bestowed on them,- there is nothing in their breasts but (the quest of) greatness, which they shall never attain to: seek refuge, then, in Allah: It is He Who hears and sees (all things).
(40:69)

Seest thou not those that dispute concerning the Signs of Allah? How are they turned away (from Reality)?-

Surah 42 al-Shūrā (The Counsel)
(42:35)

But let those know, who dispute about Our Signs, that there is for them no way of escape.

Surah 58 al-Mujādilah (She Who Pleaded)
(58:1)

قَدْ  سَمِعَ  ٱللَّـهُ  قَوْلَ  ٱلَّتِى  تُجَٰدِلُكَ  فِى  زَوْجِهَا  وَتَشْتَكِىٓ  إِلَى  ٱللَّـهِ  وَٱللَّـهُ  يَسْمَعُ  تَحَاوُرَكُمَآ  إِنَّ  ٱللَّـهَ  سَمِيعٌۢ  بَصِيرٌ qad samiʿa allāhu qawla allatī tujādiluka zawjihā wa‑tashtakī ilā allāhi wallāhu yasmaʿu taḥāwurakumā inna allāha samīʿun baṣīrun
Allah has indeed heard (and accepted) the statement of the woman who pleads with thee concerning her husband and carries her complaint (in prayer) to Allah: and Allah (always) hears the arguments between both sides among you: for Allah hears and sees (all things).
