Sura al-Baqara 2:75

أَفَتَطْمَعُونَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ لَكُمْ وَقَدْ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ كَلَٰمَ ٱللَّـهِ ثُمَّ يُحَرِّفُونَهُۥ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا عَقَلُوهُ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ

afataṭmaʿūna an yuʾminū la-kum wa-qad kāna farīqun minhum yasmaʿūna kalāma allāhi thumma yuḥarrifūnahu min baʿdi mā ʿaqalūhu wa-hum yaʿlamūna

Can ye (o ye men of Faith) entertain the hope that they will believe in you?- Seeing that a party of them heard the Word of Allah, and perverted it knowingly after they understood it.

Sura al-Baqara 2:93

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَٰقَكُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ ٱلطُّورَ خُذُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَيْنَٰكُم بِقُوَّةٍ وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ قَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا وَأُشْرِبُوا۟ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلْعِجْلَ بِكُفْرِهِمْ قُلْ بِئْسَمَا يَأْمُرُكُم بِهِۦٓ إِيمَٰنُكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

wa-idh akhadhnā mīthāqakum wa-rafaʿnā fawqakumu l-ṭūra khudhū mā ātaynākum bi-quwwātin wa-ismaʿū qālū samiʿnā wa-ʿaṣaynā wa-ushribū fī qulūbihimu l-ʿijla bi-kufrihim qul biʾsamā yaʾmurukum bihi īmānukum in kuntum muʾminīna

And remember We took your covenant and We raised above you (the towering height) of Mount (Sinai): (Saying): "Hold firmly to what We have given you, and hearken (to the Law)": They said:" We hear, and we disobey:" And they had to drink into their hearts (of the taint) of the calf because of their Faithlessness. Say: "Vile indeed are the behests of your Faith if ye have any faith!"

Sura al-Baqara 2:104

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَقُولُوا۟ رَٰعِنَا وَقُولُوا۟ ٱنظُرْنَا وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ وَلِلْكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

yā-ayyuhā lladhīna āmanū lā taqūlū rāʿinā wa-qūlū unẓurnā wa-ismaʿū wa-lil-kāfirīna ʿadhābun alīmun

O ye of Faith! Say not (to the Messenger) words of ambiguous import, but words of respect; and hearken (to him): To those without Faith is a grievous punishment.

Sura al-Baqara 2:171

وَمَثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِى يَنْعِقُ بِمَا لَا يَسْمَعُ إِلَّا دُعَآءً وَنِدَآءً صُمٌّۢ بُكْمٌ عُمْىٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ

wa-mathalu lladhīna kafarū ka-mathali alladhī yanʿiqu bi-mā lā yasmaʿu illā duʿāʾan wa-nidāʾan ṣummun bukmun ʿumun fa-hum lā yaʿqilūna

The parable of those who reject Faith is as if one were to shout Like a goat-herd, to things that listen to nothing but calls and cries: Deaf, dumb, and blind, they are void of wisdom.

Sura al-Baqara 2:181

فَمَنۢ بَدَّلَهُۥ بَعْدَمَا سَمِعَهُۥ فَإِنَّمَآ إِثْمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يُبَدِّلُونَهُۥٓ إِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

fa-man baddalahu baʿdamā samiʿahu fa-innamā ithmuhu ʿalā lladhīna yubaddilūnahu inna allāha samīʿun ʿalīmun

If anyone changes the bequest after hearing it, the guilt shall be on those who make the change. For Allah hears and knows (All things).

Sura al-Baqara 2:285

ءَامَنَ ٱلرَّسُولُ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِن رَّبِّهِۦ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ كُلٌّ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّـهِ وَمَلَٰٓئِكَتِهِۦ وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَرُسُلِهِۦ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّن رُّسُلِهِۦ وَقَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

āmana l-rasūlu bimā unzila ilayhi min rabbihi wa-l-muʾminūna kullun āmana billāhi wa-malāʾikatihi wa-kutubihi wa-rusulihi lā nufarriqu bayna aḥadin min rrusulihi wa-qālū samiʿnā wa-aṭaʿnā ghufrānaka rabbanā wa-ilayka l-maṣīru

The Messenger believeth in what hath been revealed to him from his Lord, as do the men of faith. Each one (of them) believeth in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. "We make no distinction (they say) between one and another of His messengers." And they say: "We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys."

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:181

لَّقَدْ سَمِعَ ٱللَّـهُ قَوْلَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ فَقِيرٌ وَنَحْنُ أَغْنِيَآءُ سَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَالُوا۟ وَقَتْلَهُمُ ٱلْأَنۢبِيَآءَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ وَنَقُولُ ذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابَ ٱلْحَرِيقِ

llaqad samiʿa allāhu qawla lladhīna qālū inna allāha faqīrun wa-naḥnu aghniyāʾu sa-naktubu mā qālū wa-qatlahumu l-anbiyāʾa bi-ghayri ḥaqqin wa-naqūlu dhūqū ʿadhāba l-ḥarīqi

Allah hath heard the taunt of those who say: "Truly, Allah is indigent and we are rich!"- We shall certainly record their word and (their act) of slaying the prophets in defiance of right, and We shall say: "Taste ye the penalty of the Scorching Fire!

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:186

لَتُبْلَوُنَّ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ وَلَتَسْمَعُنَّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ وَمِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوٓا۟ أَذًى كَثِيرًا وَإِن تَصْبِرُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ ٱلْأُمُورِ

la-tublawunna fī amwālikum wa-anfusikum wa-latasmaʿunna mina lladhīna ūtū l-kitāba min qablikum wa-mina lladhīna ashrakū adhan kathīran wa-in taṣbirū wa-tattaqū fa-inna dhālika min ʿazmi l-umūri

Ye shall certainly be tried and tested in your possessions and in your personal selves; and ye shall certainly Hear much that will grieve you, from those who received the Book before you and from those who worship many gods. But if ye persevere patiently, and guard against evil,-then that will be a determining factor in all affairs.

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:193

رَّبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا سَمِعْنَا مُنَادِيًا يُنَادِى لِلْإِيمَٰنِ أَنْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِرَبِّكُمْ فَـَٔامَنَّا رَبَّنَا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّـَٔاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ

rabbanā innanā samiʿnā munādiyan yunādī lil-īmāni an āminū birabbikum fa-āmannā rabbanā fa-ighfir la-nā dhunūbanā wa-kaffir ʿannā sayyiātinā wa-tawaffanā maʿa l-abrāri

"Our Lord! we have heard the call of one calling (Us) to Faith, 'Believe ye in the Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord! Forgive us our sins, blot out from us our iniquities, and take to Thyself our souls in the company of the righteous.

Sura al-Nisāʾ 4:46

مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوا۟ يُحَرِّفُونَ ٱلْكَلِمَ عَن مَّوَاضِعِهِۦ وَيَقُولُونَ سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا وَٱسْمَعْ غَيْرَ مُسْمَعٍ وَرَٰعِنَا لَيًّۢا بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ وَطَعْنًا فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا وَٱسْمَعْ وَٱنظُرْنَا لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ وَأَقْوَمَ وَلَٰكِن لَّعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّـهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا

mina lladhīna hādū yuḥarrifūna l-kalima ʿan mawāḍiʿihi wa-yaqūlūna samiʿnā wa-ʿaṣaynā wa-ismaʿ ghayra musmaʿin wa-rāʿinā layyan bi-alsinatihim wa-ṭaʿnan fī l-dīni wa-law annahum qālū samiʿnā wa-aṭaʿnā wa-ismaʿ wa-anẓurnā la-kāna khayran lahum wa-aqwama wa-lākin laʿanahumu allāhu bi-kufrihim fa-lā yuʾminūna illā qalīlan

Of the Jews there are those who displace words from their (right) places, and say: "We hear and we disobey"; and "Hear what is not Heard"; and "Ra'ina"; with a twist of their tongues and a slander to Faith. If only they had said: "We hear and we obey"; and "Do hear"; and "Do look at us"; it would have been better for them, and more proper; but Allah hath cursed them for their Unbelief; and but few of them will believe.

Sura al-Nisāʾ 4:140

وَقَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ أَنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّـهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا فَلَا تَقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَخُوضُوا۟ فِى حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِۦٓ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا مِّثْلُهُمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ جَامِعُ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ فِى جَهَنَّمَ جَمِيعًا

wa-qad nazzala ʿalaykum fī l-kitābi an idhā samiʿtum āyāti allāhi yukfaru bihā wa-yustahzaʾu bihā fa-lā taqʿudū maʿahum ḥattā yakhūḍū fī ḥadīthin ghayrihi innakum idhan mithluhum inna allāha jāmiʿu l-munāfiqīna wa-l-kāfirīna fī jahannama jamīʿan

Already has He sent you Word in the Book, that when ye hear the signs of Allah held in defiance and ridicule, ye are not to sit with them unless they turn to a different theme: if ye did, ye would be like them. For Allah will collect the hypocrites and those who defy faith - all in Hell:-

Sura al-Māʾidah 5:7

وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَةَ ٱللَّـهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَمِيثَٰقَهُ ٱلَّذِى وَاثَقَكُم بِهِۦٓ إِذْ قُلْتُمْ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّـهَ إِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ عَلِيمٌۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ

wa-idhkurū niʿmata allāhi ʿalaykum wa-mīthāqahu alladhī wāthaqakum bihi idh qultum samiʿnā wa-aṭaʿnā wa-ittaqū allāha inna allāha ʿalīmun bi-dhāti l-ṣudūri

And call in remembrance the favour of Allah unto you, and His covenant, which He ratified with you, when ye said: "We hear and we obey": And fear Allah, for Allah knoweth well the secrets of your hearts.

Sura al-Māʾidah 5:83

وَإِذَا سَمِعُوا۟ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ تَرَىٰٓ أَعْيُنَهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ ٱلدَّمْعِ مِمَّا عَرَفُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱكْتُبْنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّٰهِدِينَ

wa-idhā samiʿū mā unzila ilā l-rasūli tara aʿyunahum tafīḍu mina l-damʿi mimmā ʿarafū mina l-ḥaqqi yaqūlūna rabbanā āmannā fa-iktubnā maʿa l-shāhidīna

And when they listen to the revelation received by the Messenger, thou wilt see their eyes overflowing with tears, for they recognise the truth: they pray: "Our Lord! we believe; write us down among the witnesses.

Sura al-Māʾidah 5:108

ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يَأْتُوا۟ بِٱلشَّهَٰدَةِ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهَآ أَوْ يَخَافُوٓا۟ أَن تُرَدَّ أَيْمَٰنٌۢ بَعْدَ أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّـهَ وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ وَٱللَّـهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَٰسِقِينَ

dhālika adnā an yaʾtū bil-shahādati ʿalā wajhihā aw yakhāfū an turadda aymānun baʿda aymānihim wattaqū allāha wa-ismaʿū wallāhu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīna

That is most suitable: that they may give the evidence in its true nature and shape, or else they would fear that other oaths would be taken after their oaths. But fear Allah, and listen (to His counsel): for Allah guideth not a rebellious people:

Sura al-Anʿām 6:36

إِنَّمَا يَسْتَجِيبُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْمَعُونَ وَٱلْمَوْتَىٰ يَبْعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّـهُ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ يُرْجَعُونَ

innamā yastajību lladhīna yasmaʿūna wa-l-mawtā yabʿathuhumu allāhu thumma ilayhi yurjaʿūna

Those who listen (in truth), be sure, will accept: as to the dead, Allah will raise them up; then will they be turned unto Him.

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:100

أَوَلَمْ يَهْدِ لِلَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَهْلِهَآ أَن لَّوْ نَشَآءُ أَصَبْنَٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَنَطْبَعُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ

a-wa-lam yahdi li-lladhīna yarithūna l-arḍa min baʿdi ahlihā an law nashāʾu aṣabnāhum bi-dhunūbihim wa-naṭbaʿu ʿalā qulūbihim fa-hum lā yasmaʿūna

To those who inherit the earth in succession to its (previous) possessors, is it not a guiding, (lesson) that, if We so willed, We could punish them (too) for their sins, and seal up their hearts so that they could not hear?

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:179

وَلَقَدْ ذَرَأْنَا لِجَهَنَّمَ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْيُنٌ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ ءَاذَانٌ لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَآ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ كَٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْغَٰفِلُونَ

wa-la-qad dharanā li-jahannama kathīran mina l-jinni wa-l-insi lahum qulūbun lā yafqahūna bihā wa-lahum aʿyunun lā yubṣirūna bihā wa-lahum ādhānun lā yasmaʿūna bihā ulāʾika ka-l-anʿāmi bal hum aḍallu ulāʾika humu l-ghāfilūna

Many are the Jinns and men we have made for Hell: They have hearts wherewith they understand not, eyes wherewith they see not, and ears wherewith they hear not. They are like cattle,- nay more misguided: for they are heedless (of warning).

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:195

أَلَهُمْ أَرْجُلٌ يَمْشُونَ بِهَآ أَمْ لَهُمْ أَيْدٍ يَبْطِشُونَ بِهَآ أَمْ لَهُمْ أَعْيُنٌ يُبْصِرُونَ بِهَآ أَمْ لَهُمْ ءَاذَانٌ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا قُلِ ٱدْعُوا۟ شُرَكَآءَكُمْ ثُمَّ كِيدُونِ فَلَا تُنظِرُونِ

alahum arjulun yamshūna bihā am lahum aydin yabṭishūna bihā am lahum aʿyunun yubṣirūna bihā am lahum ādhānun yasmaʿūna bihā quli idʿū shurakāʾakum thumma kīdūni fa-lā tunẓirūni

Have they feet to walk with? Or hands to lay hold with? Or eyes to see with? Or ears to hear with? Say: "Call your 'god-partners', scheme (your worst) against me, and give me no respite!

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:198

وَإِن تَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ لَا يَسْمَعُوا۟ وَتَرَىٰهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ وَهُمْ لَا يُبْصِرُونَ

wa-in tadʿūhum ilā l-hudā lā yasmaʿū wa-tarāhum yanẓurūna ilayka wa-hum lā yubṣirūna

If thou callest them to guidance, they hear not. Thou wilt see them looking at thee, but they see not.

Sura al-Anfāl 8:20

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّـهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَا تَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ وَأَنتُمْ تَسْمَعُونَ

yā-ayyuhā lladhīna āmanū aṭīʿū allāha wa-rasūlahu wa-lā tawallaw ʿanhu wa-antum tasmaʿūna

O ye who believe! Obey Allah and His Messenger, and turn not away from him when ye hear (him speak).

Sura al-Anfāl 8:21

وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ

wa-lā takūnū kalladhīna qālū samiʿnā wa-hum lā yasmaʿūna

Nor be like those who say, "We hear," but listen not:

Sura al-Anfāl 8:31

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالُوا۟ قَدْ سَمِعْنَا لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَقُلْنَا مِثْلَ هَٰذَآ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

wa-idhā tutlā ʿalayhim āyātunā qālū qad samiʿnā law nashāʾu laqulnā mithla hādhā in hādhā illā asāṭīru l-awwalīna

When Our Signs are rehearsed to them, they say: "We have heard this (before): if we wished, we could say (words) like these: these are nothing but tales of the ancients."

Sura al-Tawbah 9:6

وَإِنْ أَحَدٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ٱسْتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرْهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسْمَعَ كَلَٰمَ ٱللَّـهِ ثُمَّ أَبْلِغْهُ مَأْمَنَهُۥ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ

wa-in aḥadun mina l-mushrikīna istajāraka faajirhu ḥattā yasmaʿa kalāma allāhi thumma ablighhu mamanahu dhālika bi-annahum qawmun lā yaʿlamūna

If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men without knowledge.

Sura Yūnus 10:67

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ لِتَسْكُنُوا۟ فِيهِ وَٱلنَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَسْمَعُونَ

huwa alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-layla li-taskunū fīhi wa-l-nahāra mubṣiran inna fī dhālika la-āyātin li-qawmin yasmaʿūna

He it is That hath made you the night that ye may rest therein, and the day to make things visible (to you). Verily in this are signs for those who listen (to His Message).

Sura Yūsuf 12:31

فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ بِمَكْرِهِنَّ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَعْتَدَتْ لَهُنَّ مُتَّكَـًٔا وَءَاتَتْ كُلَّ وَٰحِدَةٍ مِّنْهُنَّ سِكِّينًا وَقَالَتِ ٱخْرُجْ عَلَيْهِنَّ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْنَهُۥٓ أَكْبَرْنَهُۥ وَقَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ وَقُلْنَ حَٰشَ لِلَّـهِ مَا هَٰذَا بَشَرًا إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا مَلَكٌ كَرِيمٌ

fa-lammā samiʿat bimakrihinna arsalat ilayhinna wa-aʿtadat la-hunna muttakaʾan wa-ātat kulla wāḥidatin minhunna sikkīnan wa-qālati ikhruj ʿalayhinna fa-lammā raaynahu akbarnahu wa-qaṭṭaʿna aydiyahunna wa-qulna ḥāsha lillāhi mā hādhā basharan in hādhā illā malakun karīmun

When she heard of their malicious talk, she sent for them and prepared a banquet for them: she gave each of them a knife: and she said (to Joseph), "Come out before them." When they saw him, they did extol him, and (in their amazement) cut their hands: they said, "Allah preserve us! no mortal is this! this is none other than a noble angel!"

Sura al-Naḥl 16:65

وَٱللَّـهُ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَحْيَا بِهِ ٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَآ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَسْمَعُونَ

wallāhu anzala mina l-samāʾi māʾan faaḥyā bihi l-arḍa baʿda mawtihā inna fī dhālika la-āyatan li-qawmin yasmaʿūna

And Allah sends down rain from the skies, and gives therewith life to the earth after its death: verily in this is a Sign for those who listen.

Sura Maryam 19:42

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ يَٰٓأَبَتِ لِمَ تَعْبُدُ مَا لَا يَسْمَعُ وَلَا يُبْصِرُ وَلَا يُغْنِى عَنكَ شَيْـًٔا

idh qalā li-abīhi yā-abati lima taʿbudu mā lā yasmaʿu wa-lā yubṣiru wa-lā yughnī ʿanka shayʾan

Behold, he said to his father: "O my father! why worship that which heareth not and seeth not, and can profit thee nothing?

Sura Maryam 19:62

لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا إِلَّا سَلَٰمًا وَلَهُمْ رِزْقُهُمْ فِيهَا بُكْرَةً وَعَشِيًّا

lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laghwan illā salāman wa-lahum rizquhum fīhā bukratan wa-ʿashiyyan

They will not there hear any vain discourse, but only salutations of Peace: And they will have therein their sustenance, morning and evening.

Sura Maryam 19:98

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هَلْ تُحِسُّ مِنْهُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَوْ تَسْمَعُ لَهُمْ رِكْزًۢا

wa-kam ahlaknā qablahum min qarnin hal tuḥissu minhum min aḥadin aw tasmaʿu lahum rikzan

But how many (countless) generations before them have We destroyed? Canst thou find a single one of them (now) or hear (so much as) a whisper of them?

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:46

قَالَ لَا تَخَافَآ إِنَّنِى مَعَكُمَآ أَسْمَعُ وَأَرَىٰ

qalā lā takhāfā innanī maʿakumā asmaʿu wa-ara

He said: "Fear not: for I am with you: I hear and see (everything).

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:108

يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلدَّاعِىَ لَا عِوَجَ لَهُۥ وَخَشَعَتِ ٱلْأَصْوَاتُ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ فَلَا تَسْمَعُ إِلَّا هَمْسًا

yawmaʾidhin yattabiʿūna l-dāʿiya lā ʿiwaja lahu wa-khashaʿati l-aṣwātu lil-raḥmāni fa-lā tasmaʿu illā hamsan

On that Day will they follow the Caller (straight): no crookedness (can they show) him: all sounds shall humble themselves in the Presence of (Allah) Most Gracious: nothing shalt thou hear but the tramp of their feet (as they march).

Sura al-Anbiyāʾ 21:45

قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أُنذِرُكُم بِٱلْوَحْىِ وَلَا يَسْمَعُ ٱلصُّمُّ ٱلدُّعَآءَ إِذَا مَا يُنذَرُونَ

qul innamā undhirukum bil-waḥyi wa-lā yasmaʿu l-ṣummu l-duʿāʾa idhā mā yundharūna

Say, "I do but warn you according to revelation": But the deaf will not hear the call, (even) when they are warned!

Sura al-Anbiyāʾ 21:60

قَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا فَتًى يَذْكُرُهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُۥٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمُ

qālū samiʿnā fatan yadhkuruhum yuqālu lahu ibrāhīmu

They said, "We heard a youth talk of them: He is called Abraham."

Sura al-Anbiyāʾ 21:100

لَهُمْ فِيهَا زَفِيرٌ وَهُمْ فِيهَا لَا يَسْمَعُونَ

lahum fīhā zafīrun wa-hum fīhā lā yasmaʿūna

There, sobbing will be their lot, nor will they there hear (aught else).

Sura al-Anbiyāʾ 21:102

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ حَسِيسَهَا وَهُمْ فِى مَا ٱشْتَهَتْ أَنفُسُهُمْ خَٰلِدُونَ

lā yasmaʿūna ḥasīsahā wa-hum fī mā ishtahat anfusuhum khālidūna

Not the slightest sound will they hear of Hell: what their souls desired, in that will they dwell.

Sura al-Ḥajj 22:46

أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَتَكُونَ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ يَعْقِلُونَ بِهَآ أَوْ ءَاذَانٌ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَعْمَى ٱلْأَبْصَٰرُ وَلَٰكِن تَعْمَى ٱلْقُلُوبُ ٱلَّتِى فِى ٱلصُّدُورِ

a-fa-lam yasīrū fī l-arḍi fa-takūna lahum qulūbun yaʿqilūna bihā aw ādhānun yasmaʿūna bihā fainnahā lā taʿma l-abṣāru wa-lākin taʿma l-qulūbu allatī fī l-ṣudūri

Do they not travel through the land, so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear? Truly it is not their eyes that are blind, but their hearts which are in their breasts.

Sura al-Muʾminūn 23:24

فَقَالَ ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ مَا هَٰذَآ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُرِيدُ أَن يَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّـهُ لَأَنزَلَ مَلَٰٓئِكَةً مَّا سَمِعْنَا بِهَٰذَا فِىٓ ءَابَآئِنَا ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

fa-qāla l-malaʾu lladhīna kafarū min qawmihi mā hādhā illā basharun mithlukum yurīdu an yatafaḍḍala ʿalaykum wa-law shāʾa allāhu la-anzala malāʾikatan mā samiʿnā bi-hādhā fī ābāinā l-awwalīna

The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old."

Sura al-Nūr 24:12

لَّوْلَآ إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ ظَنَّ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتُ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ خَيْرًا وَقَالُوا۟ هَٰذَآ إِفْكٌ مُّبِينٌ

lawlā idh samiʿtumūhu ẓanna l-muʾminūna wa-l-muʾminātu bi-anfusihim khayran wa-qālū hādhā ifkun mubīnun

Why did not the believers - men and women - when ye heard of the affair,- put the best construction on it in their own minds and say, "This (charge) is an obvious lie"?

Sura al-Nūr 24:16

وَلَوْلَآ إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ قُلْتُم مَّا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِهَٰذَا سُبْحَٰنَكَ هَٰذَا بُهْتَٰنٌ عَظِيمٌ

wa-lawlā idh samiʿtumūhu qultum mā yakūnu lanā an nnatakallama bi-hādhā subḥānaka hādhā buhtānun ʿaẓīmun

And why did ye not, when ye heard it, say? - "It is not right of us to speak of this: Glory to Allah! this is a most serious slander!"

Sura al-Nūr 24:51

إِنَّمَا كَانَ قَوْلَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذَا دُعُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّـهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ أَن يَقُولُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

innamā kāna qawla l-muʾminīna idhā duʿū ilā allāhi wa-rasūlihi li-yaḥkuma baynahum an yaqūlū samiʿnā wa-aṭaʿnā wa-ūlāʾika humu l-mufliḥūna

The answer of the Believers, when summoned to Allah and His Messenger, in order that He may judge between them, is no other than this: they say, "We hear and we obey": it is such as these that will attain felicity.

Sura al-Furqān 25:12

إِذَا رَأَتْهُم مِّن مَّكَانٍۭ بَعِيدٍ سَمِعُوا۟ لَهَا تَغَيُّظًا وَزَفِيرًا

idhā raʾathum min makānin baʿīdin samiʿū lahā taghayyuẓan wa-zafīran

When it sees them from a place fAr off, they will hear its fury and its ranging sigh.

Sura al-Furqān 25:44

أَمْ تَحْسَبُ أَنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ أَوْ يَعْقِلُونَ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا كَٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلًا

am taḥsabu annā aktharahum yasmaʿūna aw yaʿqilūna in hum illā ka-l-anʿāmi bal hum aḍallu sabīlan

Or thinkest thou that most of them listen or understand? They are only like cattle;- nay, they are worse astray in Path.

Sura al-Shuʿarā 26:72

قَالَ هَلْ يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ إِذْ تَدْعُونَ

qalā hal yasmaʿūnakum idh tadʿūna

He said: "Do they listen to you when ye call (on them)?"

Sura al-Qaṣaṣ 28:36

فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم مُّوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا بَيِّنَٰتٍ قَالُوا۟ مَا هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّفْتَرًى وَمَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَٰذَا فِىٓ ءَابَآئِنَا ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

fa-lammā jāʾahum mūsā bi-āyātinā bayyinātin qālū mā hādhā illā siḥrun muftaran wa-mā samiʿnā bi-hādhā fī ābāinā l-awwalīna

When Moses came to them with Our clear signs, they said: "This is nothing but sorcery faked up: never did we head the like among our fathers of old!"

Sura al-Qaṣaṣ 28:55

وَإِذَا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱللَّغْوَ أَعْرَضُوا۟ عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا۟ لَنَآ أَعْمَٰلُنَا وَلَكُمْ أَعْمَٰلُكُمْ سَلَٰمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا نَبْتَغِى ٱلْجَٰهِلِينَ

wa-idhā samiʿū l-laghwa aʿraḍū ʿanhu wa-qālū lanā aʿmālunā wa-lakum aʿmālukum salāmun ʿalaykum lā nabtaghī l-jāhilīna

And when they hear vain talk, they turn away therefrom and say: "To us our deeds, and to you yours; peace be to you: we seek not the ignorant."

Sura al-Qaṣaṣ 28:71

قُلْ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِن جَعَلَ ٱللَّـهُ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ سَرْمَدًا إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ مَنْ إِلَٰهٌ غَيْرُ ٱللَّـهِ يَأْتِيكُم بِضِيَآءٍ أَفَلَا تَسْمَعُونَ

qul a-raʾaytum in jaʿala allāhu ʿalaykumu l-layla sarmadan ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati man ilāhun ghayru allāhi yaʾtīkum bi-ḍiyāʾin a-fa-lā tasmaʿūna

Say: See ye? If Allah were to make the night perpetual over you to the Day of Judgment, what god is there other than Allah, who can give you enlightenment? Will ye not then hearken?

Sura al-Rūm 30:23

وَمِنْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ مَنَامُكُم بِٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَٱبْتِغَآؤُكُم مِّن فَضْلِهِۦٓ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَسْمَعُونَ

wa-min āyātihi manāmukum bil-layli wa-l-nahāri wa-ibtighāʾukum min faḍlihi inna fī dhālika la-āyātin li-qawmin yasmaʿūna

And among His Signs is the sleep that ye take by night and by day, and the quest that ye (make for livelihood) out of His Bounty: verily in that are signs for those who hearken.

Sura Luqmān 31:7

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا وَلَّىٰ مُسْتَكْبِرًا كَأَن لَّمْ يَسْمَعْهَا كَأَنَّ فِىٓ أُذُنَيْهِ وَقْرًا فَبَشِّرْهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

wa-idhā tutlā ʿalayhi āyātunā walla mustakbiran ka-an lam yasmaʿhā ka-anna fī udhunayhi waqran fa-bashshirhu bi-ʿadhābin alīmin

When Our Signs are rehearsed to such a one, he turns away in arrogance, as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in both his ears: announce to him a grievous Penalty.

Sura al-Sajdah 32:12

وَلَوْ تَرَىٰٓ إِذِ ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ نَاكِسُوا۟ رُءُوسِهِمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ رَبَّنَآ أَبْصَرْنَا وَسَمِعْنَا فَٱرْجِعْنَا نَعْمَلْ صَٰلِحًا إِنَّا مُوقِنُونَ

wa-law tara idhi l-mujrimūna nākisū ruʾūsihim ʿinda rabbihim rabbanā abṣarnā wa-samiʿnā fa-irjiʿnā naʿmal ṣāliḥan innā mūqinūna

If only thou couldst see when the guilty ones will bend low their heads before their Lord, (saying:) "Our Lord! We have seen and we have heard: Now then send us back (to the world): we will work righteousness: for we do indeed (now) believe."

Sura al-Sajdah 32:26

أَوَلَمْ يَهْدِ لَهُمْ كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّنَ ٱلْقُرُونِ يَمْشُونَ فِى مَسَٰكِنِهِمْ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍ أَفَلَا يَسْمَعُونَ

a-wa-lam yahdi lahum kam ahlaknā min qablihim mina l-qurūni yamshūna fī masākinihim inna fī dhālika la-āyātin a-fa-lā yasmaʿūna

Does it not teach them a lesson, how many generations We destroyed before them, in whose dwellings they (now) go to and fro? Verily in that are Signs: Do they not then listen?
