Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:154

ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ عَلَيْكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ٱلْغَمِّ أَمَنَةً نُّعَاسًا يَغْشَىٰ طَآئِفَةً مِّنكُمْ وَطَآئِفَةٌ قَدْ أَهَمَّتْهُمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ يَظُنُّونَ بِٱللَّـهِ غَيْرَ ٱلْحَقِّ ظَنَّ ٱلْجَٰهِلِيَّةِ يَقُولُونَ هَل لَّنَا مِنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ مِن شَىْءٍ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَمْرَ كُلَّهُۥ لِلَّـهِ يُخْفُونَ فِىٓ أَنفُسِهِم مَّا لَا يُبْدُونَ لَكَ يَقُولُونَ لَوْ كَانَ لَنَا مِنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ شَىْءٌ مَّا قُتِلْنَا هَٰهُنَا قُل لَّوْ كُنتُمْ فِى بُيُوتِكُمْ لَبَرَزَ ٱلَّذِينَ كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقَتْلُ إِلَىٰ مَضَاجِعِهِمْ وَلِيَبْتَلِىَ ٱللَّـهُ مَا فِى صُدُورِكُمْ وَلِيُمَحِّصَ مَا فِى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَٱللَّـهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ

thumma anzala ʿalaykum min baʿdi l-ghammi amanatan nnuʿāsan yaghshā ṭāʾifatan minkum wa-ṭāʾifatun qad ahammathum anfusuhum yaẓunnūna billāhi ghayra l-ḥaqqi ẓanna l-jāhiliyyati yaqūlūna hal lanā mina l-amri min shayʾin qul inna l-amra kullahu lillāhi yukhfūna fī anfusihim mā lā yubdūna la-ka yaqūlūna law kāna la-nā mina l-amri shayʾun mā qutilnā hāhunā qul law kuntum fī buyūtikum labaraza lladhīna kutiba ʿalayhimu l-qatlu ilā maḍājiʿihim wa-li-yabtaliya allāhu mā fī ṣudūrikum wa-li-yumaḥḥiṣa mā fī qulūbikum wallāhu ʿalīmun bi-dhāti l-ṣudūri

After (the excitement) of the distress, He sent down calm on a band of you overcome with slumber, while another band was stirred to anxiety by their own feelings, Moved by wrong suspicions of Allah-suspicions due to ignorance. They said: "What affair is this of ours?" Say thou: "Indeed, this affair is wholly Allah's." They hide in their minds what they dare not reveal to thee. They say (to themselves): "If we had had anything to do with this affair, We should not have been in the slaughter here." Say: "Even if you had remained in your homes, those for whom death was decreed would certainly have gone forth to the place of their death"; but (all this was) that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purge what is in your hearts. For Allah knoweth well the secrets of your hearts.

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:54

إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱللَّـهُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ يُغْشِى ٱلَّيْلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ يَطْلُبُهُۥ حَثِيثًا وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ وَٱلنُّجُومَ مُسَخَّرَٰتٍۭ بِأَمْرِهِۦٓ أَلَا لَهُ ٱلْخَلْقُ وَٱلْأَمْرُ تَبَارَكَ ٱللَّـهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

inna rabbakumu allāhu alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wa-l-arḍa fī sittati ayyāmin thumma istawā ʿalā l-ʿarshi yughshī l-layla l-nahāra yaṭlubuhu ḥathīthan wa-l-shamsa wa-l-qamara wa-l-nujūma musakhkharātin bi-amrihi āla lahu l-khalqu wa-l-amru tabāraka allāhu rabbu l-ʿālamīna

Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He draweth the night as a veil o'er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds!

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:189

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَٰحِدَةٍ وَجَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا لِيَسْكُنَ إِلَيْهَا فَلَمَّا تَغَشَّىٰهَا حَمَلَتْ حَمْلًا خَفِيفًا فَمَرَّتْ بِهِۦ فَلَمَّآ أَثْقَلَت دَّعَوَا ٱللَّـهَ رَبَّهُمَا لَئِنْ ءَاتَيْتَنَا صَٰلِحًا لَّنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّٰكِرِينَ

huwa alladhī khalaqakum min nafsin wāḥidatin wa-jaʿala minhā zawjahā li-yaskuna ilayhā fa-lammā taghashshahā ḥamalat ḥamlan khafīfan fa-marrat bihi fa-lammā athqalat ddaʿawā allāha rabbahumā lain ātaytanā ṣāliḥan llanakūnanna mina l-shākirīna

It is He Who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her (in love). When they are united, she bears a light burden and carries it about (unnoticed). When she grows heavy, they both pray to Allah their Lord, (saying): "If Thou givest us a goodly child, we vow we shall (ever) be grateful."

Sura al-Anfāl 8:11

إِذْ يُغَشِّيكُمُ ٱلنُّعَاسَ أَمَنَةً مِّنْهُ وَيُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً لِّيُطَهِّرَكُم بِهِۦ وَيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمْ رِجْزَ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ وَلِيَرْبِطَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُمْ وَيُثَبِّتَ بِهِ ٱلْأَقْدَامَ

idh yughashshīkumu l-nuʿāsa amanatan minhu wa-yunazzilu ʿalaykum mina l-samāʾi māʾan li-yuṭahhirakum bihi wa-yudhhiba ʿankum rijza l-shayṭāni wa-li-yarbiṭa ʿalā qulūbikum wa-yuthabbita bihi l-aqdāma

Remember He covered you with a sort of drowsiness, to give you calm as from Himself, and he caused rain to descend on you from heaven, to clean you therewith, to remove from you the stain of Satan, to strengthen your hearts, and to plant your feet firmly therewith.

Sura Yūnus 10:27

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَسَبُوا۟ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ جَزَآءُ سَيِّئَةٍۭ بِمِثْلِهَا وَتَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ مَّا لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّـهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ كَأَنَّمَآ أُغْشِيَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ قِطَعًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مُظْلِمًا أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ

wa-lladhīna kasabū l-sayyiʾāti jazāʾu sayyiʾatin bi-mithlihā wa-tarhaquhum dhillatun mā lahum mina allāhi min ʿāṣimin kaannamā ughshiyat wujūhuhum qiṭaʿan mina l-layli muẓliman ulāʾika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūna

But those who have earned evil will have a reward of like evil: ignominy will cover their (faces): No defender will they have from (the wrath of) Allah: Their faces will be covered, as it were, with pieces from the depth of the darkness of night: they are companions of the Fire: they will abide therein (for aye)!

Sura Hūd 11:5

أَلَآ إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا۟ مِنْهُ أَلَا حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ ثِيَابَهُمْ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ إِنَّهُۥ عَلِيمٌۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ

āla innahum yathnūna ṣudūrahum li-yastakhfū minhu āla ḥīna yastaghshūna thiyābahum yaʿlamu mā yusirrūna wa-mā yuʿlinūna innahu ʿalīmun bi-dhāti l-ṣudūri

Behold! they fold up their hearts, that they may lie hid from Him! Ah even when they cover themselves with their garments, He knoweth what they conceal, and what they reveal: for He knoweth well the (inmost secrets) of the hearts.

Sura al-Raʿd 13:3

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى مَدَّ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنْهَٰرًا وَمِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ جَعَلَ فِيهَا زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ يُغْشِى ٱلَّيْلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

wa-huwa alladhī madda l-arḍa wa-jaʿala fīhā rawāsiya wa-anhāran wa-min kulli l-thamarāti jaʿala fīhā zawjayni ithnayni yughshī l-layla l-nahāra inna fī dhālika la-āyātin li-qawmin yatafakkarūna

And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o'er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!

Sura Ibrāhīm 14:50

سَرَابِيلُهُم مِّن قَطِرَانٍ وَتَغْشَىٰ وُجُوهَهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ

sarābīluhum min qaṭirānin wa-taghsha wujūhahumu l-nāru

Their garments of liquid pitch, and their faces covered with Fire;

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:78

فَأَتْبَعَهُمْ فِرْعَوْنُ بِجُنُودِهِۦ فَغَشِيَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْيَمِّ مَا غَشِيَهُمْ

fa-atbaʿahum firʿawun bi-junūdihi fa-ghashiyahum mina l-yammi mā ghashiyahum

Then Pharaoh pursued them with his forces, but the waters completely overwhelmed them and covered them up.

Sura al-Nūr 24:40

أَوْ كَظُلُمَٰتٍ فِى بَحْرٍ لُّجِّىٍّ يَغْشَىٰهُ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِۦ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِۦ سَحَابٌ ظُلُمَٰتٌۢ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ إِذَآ أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُۥ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَىٰهَا وَمَن لَّمْ يَجْعَلِ ٱللَّـهُ لَهُۥ نُورًا فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن نُّورٍ

aw kaẓulumātin fī baḥrin llujjiyyin yaghshahu mawjun min fawqihi mawjun min fawqihi saḥābun ẓulumātun baʿḍuhā fawqa baʿḍin idhā akhraja yadahu lam yakad yarahā wa-man lam yajʿali allāhu lahu nūran fa-mā lahu min nnūrin

Or (the Unbelievers' state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped by (dark) clouds: depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hands, he can hardly see it! for any to whom Allah giveth not light, there is no light!

Sura al-ʿAnkabūt 29:55

يَوْمَ يَغْشَىٰهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ مِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِن تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِهِمْ وَيَقُولُ ذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

yawma yaghshahumu l-ʿadhābu min fawqihim wa-min taḥti arjulihim wa-yaqūlu dhūqū mā kuntum taʿmalūna

On the Day that the Punishment shall cover them from above them and from below them, and (a Voice) shall say: "Taste ye (the fruits) of your deeds!"

Sura Luqmān 31:32

وَإِذَا غَشِيَهُم مَّوْجٌ كَٱلظُّلَلِ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّـهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمْ إِلَى ٱلْبَرِّ فَمِنْهُم مُّقْتَصِدٌ وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِلَّا كُلُّ خَتَّارٍ كَفُورٍ

wa-idhā ghashiyahum mawjun ka-l-ẓulali daʿawu allāha mukhliṣīna lahu l-dīna fa-lammā najjahum ilā l-barri fa-minhum muqtaṣidun wa-mā yajḥadu bi-āyātinā illā kullu khattārin kafūrin

When a wave covers them like the canopy (of clouds), they call to Allah, offering Him sincere devotion. But when He has delivered them safely to land, there are among them those that halt between (right and wrong). But none reject Our Signs except only a perfidious ungrateful (wretch)!

Sura al-Aḥzāb 33:19

أَشِحَّةً عَلَيْكُمْ فَإِذَا جَآءَ ٱلْخَوْفُ رَأَيْتَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ تَدُورُ أَعْيُنُهُمْ كَٱلَّذِى يُغْشَىٰ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْمَوْتِ فَإِذَا ذَهَبَ ٱلْخَوْفُ سَلَقُوكُم بِأَلْسِنَةٍ حِدَادٍ أَشِحَّةً عَلَى ٱلْخَيْرِ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوا۟ فَأَحْبَطَ ٱللَّـهُ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ وَكَانَ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّـهِ يَسِيرًا

asḥiḥḥatan ʿalaykum fa-idhā jāa l-khawfu raʾaytahum yanẓurūna ilayka tadūru aʿyunuhum ka-lladhī yughsha ʿalayhi mina l-mawti fa-idhā dhahaba l-khawfu salaqūkum bi-alsinatin ḥidādin asḥiḥḥatan ʿalā l-khayri ulāʾika lam yuʾminū fa-aḥbaṭa allāhu aʿmālahum wa-kāna dhālika ʿalā allāhi yasīran

Covetous over you. Then when fear comes, thou wilt see them looking to thee, their eyes revolving, like (those of) one over whom hovers death: but when the fear is past, they will smite you with sharp tongues, covetous of goods. Such men have no faith, and so Allah has made their deeds of none effect: and that is easy for Allah.

Sura al-Dukhān 44:11

يَغْشَى ٱلنَّاسَ هَٰذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

yaghshā l-nāsa hādhā ʿadhābun alīmun

Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous.

Sura al-Najm 53:16

إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ

idh yaghshā l-sidrata mā yaghshā

Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!)

Sura al-Najm 53:54

فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ

fa-ghashshāhā mā ghashshā

So that (ruins unknown) have covered them up.

Sura Nūḥ 71:7

وَإِنِّى كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوٓا۟ أَصَٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟ ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا۟ وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ ٱسْتِكْبَارًا

wa-innī kullamā daʿawtuhum li-taghfira lahum jaʿalū aṣābiʿahum fī ādhānihim wa-istaghshaw thiyābahum wa-aṣarrū wa-istakbarū istikbāran

"And every time I have called to them, that Thou mightest forgive them, they have (only) thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, grown obstinate, and given themselves up to arrogance.

Sura al-Shams 91:4

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا

wa-l-layli idhā yaghshāhā

By the Night as it conceals it;

Sura al-Layl 92:1

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ

walla-yli idhā yaghshā

By the Night as it conceals (the light);
