Sura al-Māʾidah 5:49

وَأَنِ ٱحْكُم بَيْنَهُم بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّـهُ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ وَٱحْذَرْهُمْ أَن يَفْتِنُوكَ عَنۢ بَعْضِ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّـهُ إِلَيْكَ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَٱعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّـهُ أَن يُصِيبَهُم بِبَعْضِ ذُنُوبِهِمْ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَفَٰسِقُونَ

wa-ani aḥkum baynahum bimā anzala allāhu wa-lā tattabiʿ ahwāʾahum wa-aḥdharhum an yaftinūka ʿan baʿḍi mā anzala allāhu ilayka fa-in tawallaw fa-iʿlam annamā yurīdu allāhu an yuṣībahum bi-baʿḍi dhunūbihim wa-inna kathīran mina l-nāsi lafāsiqūna

And this (He commands): Judge thou between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, but beware of them lest they beguile thee from any of that (teaching) which Allah hath sent down to thee. And if they turn away, be assured that for some of their crime it is Allah's purpose to punish them. And truly most men are rebellious.

Sura al-Anʿām 6:53

وَكَذَٰلِكَ فَتَنَّا بَعْضَهُم بِبَعْضٍ لِّيَقُولُوٓا۟ أَهَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَنَّ ٱللَّـهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنۢ بَيْنِنَآ أَلَيْسَ ٱللَّـهُ بِأَعْلَمَ بِٱلشَّٰكِرِينَ

wa-ka-dhālika fatannā baʿḍahum bi-baʿḍin li-yaqūlū a-hāʾulāʾi manna allāhu ʿalayhim min bayninā a-laysa allāhu bi-aʿlama bil-shākirīna

Thus did We try some of them by comparison with others, that they should say: "Is it these then that Allah hath favoured from amongst us?" Doth not Allah know best those who are grateful?

Sura al-Tawbah 9:126

أَوَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ فِى كُلِّ عَامٍ مَّرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ

awalā yarawna annahum yuftanūna fī kulli ʿāmin marratan aw marratayni thumma lā yatūbūna wa-lā hum yadhdhakkarūna

See they not that they are tried every year once or twice? Yet they turn not in repentance, and they take no heed.

Sura al-Naḥl 16:110

ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِينَ هَاجَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا فُتِنُوا۟ ثُمَّ جَٰهَدُوا۟ وَصَبَرُوٓا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهَا لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

thumma inna rabbaka li-lladhīna hājarū min baʿdi mā futinū thumma jāhadū wa-ṣabarū inna rabbaka min baʿdihā la-ghafūrun raḥīmun

But verily thy Lord,- to those who leave their homes after trials and persecutions,- and who thereafter strive and fight for the faith and patiently persevere,- Thy Lord, after all this is oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Sura al-Isrāʾ 17:73

وَإِن كَادُوا۟ لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ لِتَفْتَرِىَ عَلَيْنَا غَيْرَهُۥ وَإِذًا لَّٱتَّخَذُوكَ خَلِيلًا

wa-in kādū la-yaftinūnaka ʿani alladhī awḥaynā ilayka li-taftariya ʿalaynā ghayrahu waidhan la-ittakhadhūka khalīlan

And their purpose was to tempt thee away from that which We had revealed unto thee, to substitute in our name something quite different; (in that case), behold! they would certainly have made thee (their) friend!

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:40

إِذْ تَمْشِىٓ أُخْتُكَ فَتَقُولُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَن يَكْفُلُهُۥ فَرَجَعْنَٰكَ إِلَىٰٓ أُمِّكَ كَىْ تَقَرَّ عَيْنُهَا وَلَا تَحْزَنَ وَقَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا فَنَجَّيْنَٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَمِّ وَفَتَنَّٰكَ فُتُونًا فَلَبِثْتَ سِنِينَ فِىٓ أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ ثُمَّ جِئْتَ عَلَىٰ قَدَرٍ يَٰمُوسَىٰ

idh tamshī ukhtuka fa-taqūlu hal adullukum ʿalā man yakfuluhu farajaʿnāka ila ummika kay taqarra ʿaynuhā wa-lā taḥzana wa-qatalta nafsan fa-najjaynāka mina l-ghammi wa-fatannāka futūnan fa-labithta sinīna fī ahli madyana thumma jiʾta ʿalā qadarin yā-mūsā

"Behold! thy sister goeth forth and saith, 'shall I show you one who will nurse and rear the (child)?' So We brought thee back to thy mother, that her eye might be cooled and she should not grieve. Then thou didst slay a man, but We saved thee from trouble, and We tried thee in various ways. Then didst thou tarry a number of years with the people of Midian. Then didst thou come hither as ordained, O Moses!

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:85

قَالَ فَإِنَّا قَدْ فَتَنَّا قَوْمَكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِكَ وَأَضَلَّهُمُ ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ

qalā fa-innā qad fatannā qawmaka min baʿdika wa-aḍallahumu l-sāmiriyyu

(Allah) said: "We have tested thy people in thy absence: the Samiri has led them astray."

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:90

وَلَقَدْ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَٰرُونُ مِن قَبْلُ يَٰقَوْمِ إِنَّمَا فُتِنتُم بِهِۦ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ فَٱتَّبِعُونِى وَأَطِيعُوٓا۟ أَمْرِى

wa-la-qad qalā lahum hārūnu min qablu yā-qawmi innamā futintum bihi wa-inna rabbakumu l-raḥmānu fa-ittabiʿūnī wa-aṭīʿū amrī

Aaron had already, before this said to them: "O my people! ye are being tested in this: for verily your Lord is (Allah) Most Gracious; so follow me and obey my command."

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:131

وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًا مِّنْهُمْ زَهْرَةَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ وَرِزْقُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ

wa-lā tamuddanna ʿaynayka ilā mā mattaʿnā bihi azwājan minhum zahrata l-ḥayāti l-dunyā li-naftinahum fīhi wa-rizqu rabbika khayrun wa-abqā

Nor strain thine eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to parties of them, the splendour of the life of this world, through which We test them: but the provision of thy Lord is better and more enduring.

Sura al-Naml 27:47

قَالُوا۟ ٱطَّيَّرْنَا بِكَ وَبِمَن مَّعَكَ قَالَ طَٰٓئِرُكُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّـهِ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ تُفْتَنُونَ

qālū ṭṭayyarnā bika wa-biman maʿaka qalā ṭāʾirukum ʿinda allāhi bal antum qawmun tuftanūna

They said: "Ill omen do we augur from thee and those that are with thee". He said: "Your ill omen is with Allah; yea, ye are a people under trial."

Sura al-ʿAnkabūt 29:2

أَحَسِبَ ٱلنَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوٓا۟ أَن يَقُولُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ

aḥasiba l-nāsu an yutrakū an yaqūlū āmannā wa-hum lā yuftanūna

Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested?

Sura al-ʿAnkabūt 29:3

وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ ٱللَّـهُ ٱلَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا۟ وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ

wa-la-qad fatannā lladhīna min qablihim fa-la-yaʿlamanna allāhu lladhīna ṣadaqū wa-la-yaʿlamanna l-kādhibīna

We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.

Sura Ṣād 38:24

قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبْغِى بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَّا هُمْ وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّٰهُ فَٱسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ

qalā la-qad ẓalamaka bi-suʾāli naʿjatika ilā niʿājihi wa-inna kathīran mina l-khulaṭāʾi la-yabghī baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin illā lladhīna āmanū wa-ʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wa-qalīlun mā hum wa-ẓanna dāwudu annamā fatannāhu fa-istaghfara rabbahu wa-kharra rākiʿan wa-anāba

(David) said: "He has undoubtedly wronged thee in demanding thy (single) ewe to be added to his (flock of) ewes: truly many are the partners (in business) who wrong each other: Not so do those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and how few are they?"...and David gathered that We had tried him: he asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down, bowing (in prostration), and turned (to Allah in repentance).

Sura Ṣād 38:34

وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا سُلَيْمَٰنَ وَأَلْقَيْنَا عَلَىٰ كُرْسِيِّهِۦ جَسَدًا ثُمَّ أَنَابَ

wa-la-qad fatannā sulaymāna wa-alqaynā ʿalā kursiyyihi jasadan thumma anāba

And We did try Solomon: We placed on his throne a body (without life); but he did turn (to Us in true devotion):

Sura al-Dukhān 44:17

وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ كَرِيمٌ

wa-la-qad fatannā qablahum qawma firʿawna wa-jāʾahum rasūlun karīmun

We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable,

Sura al-Dhāriyāt 51:13

يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ

yawma hum ʿalā l-nāri yuftanūna

(It will be) a Day when they will be tried (and tested) over the Fire!

Sura al-Ḥadīd 57:14

يُنَادُونَهُمْ أَلَمْ نَكُن مَّعَكُمْ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَلَٰكِنَّكُمْ فَتَنتُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَتَرَبَّصْتُمْ وَٱرْتَبْتُمْ وَغَرَّتْكُمُ ٱلْأَمَانِىُّ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَ أَمْرُ ٱللَّـهِ وَغَرَّكُم بِٱللَّـهِ ٱلْغَرُورُ

yunādūnahum a-lam nakun maʿakum qālū balā wa-lākinnakum fatantum anfusakum wa-tarabbaṣtum wa-artabtum wa-gharratkumu l-amāniyyu ḥattā jāa amru allāhi wa-gharrakum billāhi l-gharūru

(Those without) will call out, "Were we not with you?" (The others) will reply, "True! but ye led yourselves into temptation; ye looked forward (to our ruin); ye doubted (Allah's Promise); and (your false) desires deceived you; until there issued the Command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you in respect of Allah.

Sura al-Jinn 72:17

لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِۦ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًا

li-naftinahum fīhi wa-man yuʿriḍ ʿan dhikri rabbihi yaslukhu ʿadhāban ṣaʿadan

"That We might try them by that (means). But if any turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will cause him to undergo a severe Penalty.

Sura al-Burūj 85:10

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ

inna lladhīna fatanū l-muʾminīna wa-l-muʾmināti thumma lam yatūbū fa-lahum ʿadhābu jahannama wa-lahum ʿadhābu l-ḥarīqi

Those who persecute (or draw into temptation) the Believers, men and women, and do not turn in repentance, will have the Penalty of Hell: They will have the Penalty of the Burning Fire.
