Sura al-Nisāʾ 4:78

أَيْنَمَا تَكُونُوا۟ يُدْرِككُّمُ ٱلْمَوْتُ وَلَوْ كُنتُمْ فِى بُرُوجٍ مُّشَيَّدَةٍ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ حَسَنَةٌ يَقُولُوا۟ هَٰذِهِۦ مِنْ عِندِ ٱللَّـهِ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ يَقُولُوا۟ هَٰذِهِۦ مِنْ عِندِكَ قُلْ كُلٌّ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّـهِ فَمَالِ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ٱلْقَوْمِ لَا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ حَدِيثًا

aynamā takūnū yudrikkkumu l-mawtu wa-law kuntum fī burūjin mushayyadatin wa-in tuṣibhum ḥasanatun yaqūlū hādhihi min ʿindi allāhi wa-in tuṣibhum sayyiʾatun yaqūlū hādhihi min ʿindika qul kullun min ʿindi allāhi fa-māli hāʾulāʾi l-qawmi lā yakādūna yafqahūna ḥadīthan

"Wherever ye are, death will find you out, even if ye are in towers built up strong and high!" If some good befalls them, they say, "This is from Allah"; but if evil, they say, "This is from thee" (O Prophet). Say: "All things are from Allah." But what hath come to these people, that they fail to understand a single fact?

Sura al-Anʿām 6:25

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَسْتَمِعُ إِلَيْكَ وَجَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَن يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًا وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ كُلَّ ءَايَةٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِهَا حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءُوكَ يُجَٰدِلُونَكَ يَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

wa-minhum man yastamiʿu ilayka wa-jaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wa-fī ādhānihim waqran wa-in yaraw kulla āyatin lā yuʾminū bihā ḥatta idhā jāʾūka yujādilūnaka yaqūlu lladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā asāṭīru l-awwalīna

Of them there are some who (pretend to) listen to thee; but We have thrown veils on their hearts, So they understand it not, and deafness in their ears; if they saw every one of the signs, not they will believe in them; in so much that when they come to thee, they (but) dispute with thee; the Unbelievers say: "These are nothing but tales of the ancients."

Sura al-Anʿām 6:65

قُلْ هُوَ ٱلْقَادِرُ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابًا مِّن فَوْقِكُمْ أَوْ مِن تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِكُمْ أَوْ يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُم بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ ٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ نُصَرِّفُ ٱلْأَيَٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَفْقَهُونَ

qul huwa l-qādiru ʿala an yabʿatha ʿalaykum ʿadhāban min fawqikum aw min taḥti arjulikum aw yalbisakum shiyaʿan wa-yudhīqa baʿḍakum baʾsa baʿḍin inẓur kayfa nuṣarrifu l-ayāti la-ʿallahum yafqahūna

Say: "He hath power to send calamities on you, from above and below, or to cover you with confusion in party strife, giving you a taste of mutual vengeance - each from the other." See how We explain the signs by various (symbols); that they may understand.

Sura al-Anʿām 6:98

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنشَأَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَٰحِدَةٍ فَمُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمُسْتَوْدَعٌ قَدْ فَصَّلْنَا ٱلْأَيَٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَفْقَهُونَ

wa-huwa alladhī anshaʾakum min nafsin wāḥidatin fa-mustaqarrun wa-mustawdaʿun qad faṣṣalnā l-ayāti li-qawmin yafqahūna

It is He Who hath produced you from a single person: here is a place of sojourn and a place of departure: We detail Our signs for people who understand.

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:179

وَلَقَدْ ذَرَأْنَا لِجَهَنَّمَ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْيُنٌ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ ءَاذَانٌ لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَآ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ كَٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْغَٰفِلُونَ

wa-la-qad dharanā li-jahannama kathīran mina l-jinni wa-l-insi lahum qulūbun lā yafqahūna bihā wa-lahum aʿyunun lā yubṣirūna bihā wa-lahum ādhānun lā yasmaʿūna bihā ulāʾika ka-l-anʿāmi bal hum aḍallu ulāʾika humu l-ghāfilūna

Many are the Jinns and men we have made for Hell: They have hearts wherewith they understand not, eyes wherewith they see not, and ears wherewith they hear not. They are like cattle,- nay more misguided: for they are heedless (of warning).

Sura al-Anfāl 8:65

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ حَرِّضِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَى ٱلْقِتَالِ إِن يَكُن مِّنكُمْ عِشْرُونَ صَٰبِرُونَ يَغْلِبُوا۟ مِا۟ئَتَيْنِ وَإِن يَكُن مِّنكُم مِّا۟ئَةٌ يَغْلِبُوٓا۟ أَلْفًا مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ

yā-ayyuhā l-nabiyyu ḥarriḍi l-muʾminīna ʿalā l-qitāli in yakun minkum ʿishrūna ṣābirūna yaghlibū miʾatayni wa-in yakun minkum miʾatun yaghlibū alfan mina lladhīna kafarū bi-annahum qawmun lā yafqahūna

O Prophet! rouse the Believers to the fight. If there are twenty amongst you, patient and persevering, they will vanquish two hundred: if a hundred, they will vanquish a thousand of the Unbelievers: for these are a people without understanding.

Sura al-Tawbah 9:81

فَرِحَ ٱلْمُخَلَّفُونَ بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ خِلَٰفَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّـهِ وَكَرِهُوٓا۟ أَن يُجَٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّـهِ وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَنفِرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْحَرِّ قُلْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرًّا لَّوْ كَانُوا۟ يَفْقَهُونَ

fariḥa l-mukhallafūna bi-maqʿadihim khilāfa rasūli allāhi wa-karihū an yujāhidū bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim fī sabīli allāhi wa-qālū lā tanfirū fī l-ḥarri qul nāru jahannama ashaddu ḥarran law kānū yafqahūna

Those who were left behind (in the Tabuk expedition) rejoiced in their inaction behind the back of the Messenger of Allah: they hated to strive and fight, with their goods and their persons, in the cause of Allah: they said, "Go not forth in the heat." Say, "The fire of Hell is fiercer in heat." If only they could understand!

Sura al-Tawbah 9:87

رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

raḍū bi-an yakūnū maʿa l-khawālifi wa-ṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fa-hum lā yafqahūna

They prefer to be with (the women), who remain behind (at home): their hearts are sealed and so they understand not.

Sura al-Tawbah 9:122

وَمَا كَانَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ لِيَنفِرُوا۟ كَآفَّةً فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ طَآئِفَةٌ لِّيَتَفَقَّهُوا۟ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلِيُنذِرُوا۟ قَوْمَهُمْ إِذَا رَجَعُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَحْذَرُونَ

wa-mā kāna l-muʾminūna li-yanfirū kāffatan fa-lawlā nafara min kulli firqatin minhum ṭāʾifatun li-yatafaqqahū fī l-dīni wa-li-yundhirū qawmahum idhā rajaʿū ilayhim la-ʿallahum yaḥdharūna

Nor should the Believers all go forth together: if a contingent from every expedition remained behind, they could devote themselves to studies in religion, and admonish the people when they return to them,- that thus they (may learn) to guard themselves (against evil).

Sura al-Tawbah 9:127

وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَرَىٰكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ صَرَفَ ٱللَّـهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ

wa-idhā mā unzilat sūratun naẓara baʿḍuhum ilā baʿḍin hal yarakum min aḥadin thumma anṣarafū ṣarafa allāhu qulūbahum bi-annahum qawmun lā yafqahūna

Whenever there cometh down a Sura, they look at each other, (saying), "Doth anyone see you?" Then they turn aside: Allah hath turned their hearts (from the light); for they are a people that understand not.

Sura al-Isrāʾ 17:46

وَجَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَن يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًا وَإِذَا ذَكَرْتَ رَبَّكَ فِى ٱلْقُرْءَانِ وَحْدَهُۥ وَلَّوْا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَدْبَٰرِهِمْ نُفُورًا

wa-jaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wa-fī ādhānihim waqran wa-idhā dhakarta rabbaka fī l-qurʾāni waḥdahu wallaw ʿala adbārihim nufūran

And We put coverings over their hearts (and minds) lest they should understand the Qur'an, and deafness into their ears: when thou dost commemorate thy Lord and Him alone in the Qur'an, they turn on their backs, fleeing (from the Truth).

Sura al-Kahf 18:57

وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِۦ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا وَنَسِىَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَن يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًا وَإِن تَدْعُهُمْ إِلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ فَلَن يَهْتَدُوٓا۟ إِذًا أَبَدًا

wa-man aẓlamu mimman dhukkira bi-āyāti rabbihi fa-aʿraḍa ʿanhā wa-nasiya mā qaddamat yadāhu innā jaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wa-fī ādhānihim waqran wa-in tadʿuhum ilā l-hudā fa-lan yahtadū idhan abadan

And who doth more wrong than one who is reminded of the Signs of his Lord, but turns away from them, forgetting the (deeds) which his hands have sent forth? Verily We have set veils over their hearts lest they should understand this, and over their ears, deafness, if thou callest them to guidance, even then will they never accept guidance.

Sura al-Kahf 18:93

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ بَيْنَ ٱلسَّدَّيْنِ وَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمَا قَوْمًا لَّا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ قَوْلًا

ḥatta idhā balagha bayna l-saddayni wajada min dūnihimā qawman lā yakādūna yafqahūna qawlan

Until, when he reached (a tract) between two mountains, he found, beneath them, a people who scarcely understood a word.

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:28

يَفْقَهُوا۟ قَوْلِى

yafqahū qawlī

"So they may understand what I say:

Sura al-Fatḥ 48:15

سَيَقُولُ ٱلْمُخَلَّفُونَ إِذَا ٱنطَلَقْتُمْ إِلَىٰ مَغَانِمَ لِتَأْخُذُوهَا ذَرُونَا نَتَّبِعْكُمْ يُرِيدُونَ أَن يُبَدِّلُوا۟ كَلَٰمَ ٱللَّـهِ قُل لَّن تَتَّبِعُونَا كَذَٰلِكُمْ قَالَ ٱللَّـهُ مِن قَبْلُ فَسَيَقُولُونَ بَلْ تَحْسُدُونَنَا بَلْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا

sa-yaqūlu l-mukhallafūna idhā inṭalaqtum ilā maghānima li-taʾkhudhūhā dharūnā nattabiʿkum yurīdūna an yubaddilū kalāma allāhi qul lan tattabiʿūnā kadhālikum qalā allāhu min qablu fa-sa-yaqūlūna bal taḥsudūnanā bal kānū lā yafqahūna illā qalīlan

Those who lagged behind (will say), when ye (are free to) march and take booty (in war): "Permit us to follow you." They wish to change Allah's decree: Say: "Not thus will ye follow us: Allah has already declared (this) beforehand": then they will say, "But ye are jealous of us." Nay, but little do they understand (such things).

Sura al-Ḥashr 59:13

لَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ رَهْبَةً فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنَ ٱللَّـهِ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ

laantum ashaddu rahbatan fī ṣudūrihim mina allāhi dhālika bi-annahum qawmun lā yafqahūna

Of a truth ye are stronger (than they) because of the terror in their hearts, (sent) by Allah. This is because they are men devoid of understanding.

Sura al-Munāfiqūn 63:3

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

dhālika bi-annahum āmanū thumma kafarū fa-ṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fa-hum lā yafqahūna

That is because they believed, then they rejected Faith: So a seal was set on their hearts: therefore they understand not.

Sura al-Munāfiqūn 63:7

هُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنفِقُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَنْ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّـهِ حَتَّىٰ يَنفَضُّوا۟ وَلِلَّەِ خَزَآئِنُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

humu lladhīna yaqūlūna lā tunfiqū ʿalā man ʿinda rasūli allāhi ḥattā yanfaḍḍū wa-lillahi khazāʾinu l-samāwāti wa-l-arḍi wa-lākinna l-munāfiqīna lā yafqahūna

They are the ones who say, "Spend nothing on those who are with Allah's Messenger, to the end that they may disperse (and quit Medina)." But to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the Hypocrites understand not.
