Surah 2 al-Baqara (The Cow)
RefArabic    TransliterationTranslation
(2:67)

وَإِذْ  قَالَ  مُوسَىٰ  لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ  إِنَّ  ٱللَّـهَ  يَأْمُرُكُمْ  أَن  تَذْبَحُوا۟  بَقَرَةً  قَالُوٓا۟  أَتَتَّخِذُنَا  هُزُوًا  قَالَ  أَعُوذُ  بِٱللَّـهِ  أَنْ  أَكُونَ  مِنَ  ٱلْجَٰهِلِينَ wa‑idh qalā mūsā li‑qawmihi inna allāha yaʾmurukum an tadhbaḥū baqaratan qālū atattakhidhunā huzuwan qalā aʿūdhu billāhi an akūna mina l‑jāhilīna
And remember Moses said to his people: "Allah commands that ye sacrifice a heifer." They said: "Makest thou a laughing-stock of us?" He said: "Allah save me from being an ignorant (fool)!"

Surah 4 al-Nisāʾ (The Women)
(4:72)

وَإِنَّ  مِنكُمْ  لَمَن  لَّيُبَطِّئَنَّ  فَإِنْ  أَصَٰبَتْكُم  مُّصِيبَةٌ  قَالَ  قَدْ  أَنْعَمَ  ٱللَّـهُ  عَلَىَّ  إِذْ  لَمْ  أَكُن  مَّعَهُمْ  شَهِيدًا wa‑inna minkum laman llayubaṭṭianna fa‑in aṣābatkum muṣībatun qalā qad anʿama allāhu ʿalayya idh lam akun maʿahum shahīdan
There are certainly among you men who would tarry behind: If a misfortune befalls you, they say: "Allah did favour us in that we were not present among them."
(4:73)

وَلَئِنْ  أَصَٰبَكُمْ  فَضْلٌ  مِّنَ  ٱللَّـهِ  لَيَقُولَنَّ  كَأَن  لَّمْ  تَكُنۢ  بَيْنَكُمْ  وَبَيْنَهُۥ  مَوَدَّةٌ  يَٰلَيْتَنِى  كُنتُ  مَعَهُمْ  فَأَفُوزَ  فَوْزًا  عَظِيمًا wa‑lain aṣābakum faḍlun mina allāhi la‑yaqūlanna ka‑an lam takun baynakum wa‑baynahu mawaddatun yā‑laytanī kuntu maʿahum fa‑afūza fawzan ʿaẓīman
But if good fortune comes to you from Allah, they would be sure to say - as if there had never been Ties of affection between you and them - "Oh! I wish I had been with them; a fine thing should I then have made of it!"
(4:97)

إِنَّ  ٱلَّذِينَ  تَوَفَّىٰهُمُ  ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ  ظَالِمِىٓ  أَنفُسِهِمْ  قَالُوا۟  فِيمَ  كُنتُمْ  قَالُوا۟  كُنَّا  مُسْتَضْعَفِينَ  فِى  ٱلْأَرْضِ  قَالُوٓا۟  أَلَمْ  تَكُنْ  أَرْضُ  ٱللَّـهِ  وَٰسِعَةً  فَتُهَاجِرُوا۟  فِيهَا  فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ  مَأْوَىٰهُمْ  جَهَنَّمُ  وَسَآءَتْ  مَصِيرًا inna lladhīna tawaffahumu l‑malāʾikatu ẓālimī anfusihim qālū fīma kuntum qālū kunnā mustaḍʿafīna l‑arḍi qālū a‑lam takun arḍu allāhi wāsiʿatan fa‑tuhājirū fīhā fa‑ūlāʾika maʾwāhum jahannamu wa‑sāʾat maṣīran
When angels take the souls of those who die in sin against their souls, they say: "In what (plight) Were ye?" They reply: "Weak and oppressed Were we in the earth." They say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to move yourselves away (From evil)?" Such men will find their abode in Hell,- What an evil refuge! -
(4:141)

ٱلَّذِينَ  يَتَرَبَّصُونَ  بِكُمْ  فَإِن  كَانَ  لَكُمْ  فَتْحٌ  مِّنَ  ٱللَّـهِ  قَالُوٓا۟  أَلَمْ  نَكُن  مَّعَكُمْ  وَإِن  كَانَ  لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ  نَصِيبٌ  قَالُوٓا۟  أَلَمْ  نَسْتَحْوِذْ  عَلَيْكُمْ  وَنَمْنَعْكُم  مِّنَ  ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ  فَٱللَّـهُ  يَحْكُمُ  بَيْنَكُمْ  يَوْمَ  ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ  وَلَن  يَجْعَلَ  ٱللَّـهُ  لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ  عَلَى  ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ  سَبِيلًا lladhīna yatarabbaṣūna bikum fa‑in kāna la‑kum fatḥun mina allāhi qālū a‑lam nakun maʿakum wa‑in kāna lil‑kāfirīna naṣībun qālū a‑lam nastaḥwidh ʿalaykum wa‑namnaʿkum mina l‑muʾminīna fallāhu yaḥkumu baynakum yawma l‑qiyāmati wa‑lan yajʿala allāhu lil‑kāfirīna ʿalā l‑muʾminīna sabīlan
(These are) the ones who wait and watch about you: if ye do gain a victory from Allah, they say: "Were we not with you?"- but if the unbelievers gain a success, they say (to them): "Did we not gain an advantage over you, and did we not guard you from the believers?" but Allah will judge betwixt you on the Day of Judgment. And never will Allah grant to the unbelievers a way (to triumphs) over the believers.

Surah 5 al-Māʾidah (The Table Spread)
(5:31)

فَبَعَثَ  ٱللَّـهُ  غُرَابًا  يَبْحَثُ  فِى  ٱلْأَرْضِ  لِيُرِيَهُۥ  كَيْفَ  يُوَٰرِى  سَوْءَةَ  أَخِيهِ  قَالَ  يَٰوَيْلَتَىٰٓ  أَعَجَزْتُ  أَنْ  أَكُونَ  مِثْلَ  هَٰذَا  ٱلْغُرَابِ  فَأُوَٰرِىَ  سَوْءَةَ  أَخِى  فَأَصْبَحَ  مِنَ  ٱلنَّٰدِمِينَ fa‑baʿatha allāhu ghurāban yabḥathu l‑arḍi li‑yuriyahu kayfa yuwārī sawata akhīhi qalā yāwaylata aʿajaztu an akūna mithla hādhā l‑ghurābi fa‑uwāriya sawata akhī fa‑aṣbaḥa mina l‑nādimīna
Then Allah sent a raven, who scratched the ground, to show him how to hide the shame of his brother. "Woe is me!" said he; "Was I not even able to be as this raven, and to hide the shame of my brother?" then he became full of regrets-
(5:113)

قَالُوا۟  نُرِيدُ  أَن  نَّأْكُلَ  مِنْهَا  وَتَطْمَئِنَّ  قُلُوبُنَا  وَنَعْلَمَ  أَن  قَدْ  صَدَقْتَنَا  وَنَكُونَ  عَلَيْهَا  مِنَ  ٱلشَّٰهِدِينَ qālū nurīdu an nnakula minhā wa‑taṭmaʾinna qulūbunā wa‑naʿlama an qad ṣadaqtanā wa‑nakūna ʿalayhā mina l‑shāhidīna
They said: "We only wish to eat thereof and satisfy our hearts, and to know that thou hast indeed told us the truth; and that we ourselves may be witnesses to the miracle."
(5:116)

And behold! Allah will say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah'?" He will say: "Glory to Thee! never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my heart, Thou I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowest in full all that is hidden.
(5:117)

Surah 6 al-Anʿām (The Cattle)
(6:14)

قُلْ  أَغَيْرَ  ٱللَّـهِ  أَتَّخِذُ  وَلِيًّا  فَاطِرِ  ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ  وَٱلْأَرْضِ  وَهُوَ  يُطْعِمُ  وَلَا  يُطْعَمُ  قُلْ  إِنِّىٓ  أُمِرْتُ  أَنْ  أَكُونَ  أَوَّلَ  مَنْ  أَسْلَمَ  وَلَا  تَكُونَنَّ  مِنَ  ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ qul aghayra allāhi attakhidhu waliyyan fāṭiri l‑samāwāti wa‑l‑arḍi wa‑huwa yuṭʿimu wa‑lā yuṭʿamu qul innī umirtu an akūna awwala man aslama wa‑lā takūnanna mina l‑mushrikīna
Say: "Shall I take for my protector any other than Allah, the Maker of the heavens and the earth? And He it is that feedeth but is not fed." Say: "Nay! but I am commanded to be the first of those who bow to Allah (in Islam), and be not thou of the company of those who join gods with Allah."
(6:23)

There will then be (left) no subterfuge for them but to say: "By Allah our Lord, we were not those who joined gods with Allah."
(6:27)

If thou couldst but see when they are confronted with the Fire! They will say: "Would that we were but sent back! Then would we not reject the signs of our Lord, but would be amongst those who believe!"
(6:63)

قُلْ  مَن  يُنَجِّيكُم  مِّن  ظُلُمَٰتِ  ٱلْبَرِّ  وَٱلْبَحْرِ  تَدْعُونَهُۥ  تَضَرُّعًا  وَخُفْيَةً  لَّئِنْ  أَنجَىٰنَا  مِنْ  هَٰذِهِۦ  لَنَكُونَنَّ  مِنَ  ٱلشَّٰكِرِينَ qul man yunajjīkum min ẓulumāti l‑barri wa‑l‑baḥri tadʿūnahu taḍarruʿan wa‑khufyatan la‑in anjānā min hādhihi la‑nakūnanna mina l‑shākirīna
Say: "Who is it that delivereth you from the dark recesses of land and sea, when ye call upon Him in humility and silent terror: 'If He only delivers us from these (dangers), (we vow) we shall truly show our gratitude'?"
(6:77)

When he saw the moon rising in splendour, he said: "This is my Lord." But when the moon set, He said: "unless my Lord guide me, I shall surely be among those who go astray."

أَن  تَقُولُوٓا۟  إِنَّمَآ  أُنزِلَ  ٱلْكِتَٰبُ  عَلَىٰ  طَآئِفَتَيْنِ  مِن  قَبْلِنَا  وَإِن  كُنَّا  عَن  دِرَاسَتِهِمْ  لَغَٰفِلِينَ an taqūlū innamā unzila l‑kitābu ʿalā ṭāʾifatayni min qablinā wa‑in kunnā ʿan dirāsatihim la‑ghāfilīna
Lest ye should say: "The Book was sent down to two Peoples before us, and for our part, we remained unacquainted with all that they learned by assiduous study:"
(6:157)

أَوْ  تَقُولُوا۟  لَوْ  أَنَّآ  أُنزِلَ  عَلَيْنَا  ٱلْكِتَٰبُ  لَكُنَّآ  أَهْدَىٰ  مِنْهُمْ  فَقَدْ  جَآءَكُم  بَيِّنَةٌ  مِّن  رَّبِّكُمْ  وَهُدًى  وَرَحْمَةٌ  فَمَنْ  أَظْلَمُ  مِمَّن  كَذَّبَ  بِـَٔايَٰتِ  ٱللَّـهِ  وَصَدَفَ  عَنْهَا  سَنَجْزِى  ٱلَّذِينَ  يَصْدِفُونَ  عَنْ  ءَايَٰتِنَا  سُوٓءَ  ٱلْعَذَابِ  بِمَا  كَانُوا۟  يَصْدِفُونَ aw taqūlū law annā unzila ʿalaynā l‑kitābu la‑kunnā ahdā minhum fa‑qad jāʾakum bayyinatun min rabbikum wa‑hudan wa‑raḥmatun fa‑man aẓlamu mimman kadhdhaba bi‑āyāti allāhi wa‑ṣadafa ʿanhā sanajzī lladhīna yaṣdifūna ʿan āyātinā suʾa l‑ʿadhābi bi‑mā kānū yaṣdifūna
Or lest ye should say: "If the Book had only been sent down to us, we should have followed its guidance better than they." Now then hath come unto you a clear (sign) from your Lord,- and a guide and a mercy: then who could do more wrong than one who rejecteth Allah's signs, and turneth away therefrom? In good time shall We requite those who turn away from Our signs, with a dreadful penalty, for their turning away.

Surah 7 al-Aʿrāf (The Heights)
(7:5)

فَمَا  كَانَ  دَعْوَىٰهُمْ  إِذْ  جَآءَهُم  بَأْسُنَآ  إِلَّآ  أَن  قَالُوٓا۟  إِنَّا  كُنَّا  ظَٰلِمِينَ fa‑mā kāna daʿwahum idh jāʾahum basunā illā an qālū innā kunnā ẓālimīna
When (thus) Our punishment took them, no cry did they utter but this: "Indeed we did wrong."
(7:7)

And verily, We shall recount their whole story with knowledge, for We were never absent (at any time or place).
(7:23)

قَالَا  رَبَّنَا  ظَلَمْنَآ  أَنفُسَنَا  وَإِن  لَّمْ  تَغْفِرْ  لَنَا  وَتَرْحَمْنَا  لَنَكُونَنَّ  مِنَ  ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ qalā rabbanā ẓalamnā anfusanā wa‑in lam taghfir la‑nā wa‑tarḥamnā la‑nakūnanna mina l‑khāsirīna
They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged our own souls: If thou forgive us not and bestow not upon us Thy Mercy, we shall certainly be lost."
(7:43)

وَنَزَعْنَا  مَا  فِى  صُدُورِهِم  مِّنْ  غِلٍّ  تَجْرِى  مِن  تَحْتِهِمُ  ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ  وَقَالُوا۟  ٱلْحَمْدُ  لِلَّـهِ  ٱلَّذِى  هَدَىٰنَا  لِهَٰذَا  وَمَا  كُنَّا  لِنَهْتَدِىَ  لَوْلَآ  أَنْ  هَدَىٰنَا  ٱللَّـهُ  لَقَدْ  جَآءَتْ  رُسُلُ  رَبِّنَا  بِٱلْحَقِّ  وَنُودُوٓا۟  أَن  تِلْكُمُ  ٱلْجَنَّةُ  أُورِثْتُمُوهَا  بِمَا  كُنتُمْ  تَعْمَلُونَ wanazaʿnā ṣudūrihim min ghillin tajrī min taḥtihimu l‑anhāru wa‑qālū l‑ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī hadanā li‑hādhā wa‑mā kunnā li‑nahtadiya lawlā an hadanā allāhu la‑qad jāʾat rusulu rabbinā bil‑ḥaqqi wa‑nūdū an tilkumu l‑jannatu ūrithtumūhā bi‑mā kuntum taʿmalūna
And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury;- beneath them will be rivers flowing;- and they shall say: "Praise be to Allah, who hath guided us to this (felicity): never could we have found guidance, had it not been for the guidance of Allah: indeed it was the truth, that the messengers of our Lord brought unto us." And they shall hear the cry: "Behold! the garden before you! Ye have been made its inheritors, for your deeds (of righteousness)."
(7:53)

Do they just wait for the final fulfilment of the event? On the day the event is finally fulfilled, those who disregarded it before will say: "The messengers of our Lord did indeed bring true (tidings). Have we no intercessors now to intercede on our behalf? Or could we be sent back? then should we behave differently from our behaviour in the past." In fact they will have lost their souls, and the things they invented will leave them in the lurch.
(7:88)

The leaders, the arrogant party among his people, said: "O Shu'aib! we shall certainly drive thee out of our city - (thee) and those who believe with thee; or else ye (thou and they) shall have to return to our ways and religion." He said: "What! even though we do detest (them)?

When thy Lord drew forth from the Children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants, and made them testify concerning themselves, (saying): "Am I not your Lord (who cherishes and sustains you)?"- They said: "Yea! We do testify!" (This), lest ye should say on the Day of Judgment: "Of this we were never mindful":
