Surah 4 al-Nisāʾ (The Women)
RefArabic    TransliterationTranslation
(4:3)

وَإِنْ  خِفْتُمْ  أَلَّا  تُقْسِطُوا۟  فِى  ٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ  فَٱنكِحُوا۟  مَا  طَابَ  لَكُم  مِّنَ  ٱلنِّسَآءِ  مَثْنَىٰ  وَثُلَٰثَ  وَرُبَٰعَ  فَإِنْ  خِفْتُمْ  أَلَّا  تَعْدِلُوا۟  فَوَٰحِدَةً  أَوْ  مَا  مَلَكَتْ  أَيْمَٰنُكُمْ  ذَٰلِكَ  أَدْنَىٰٓ  أَلَّا  تَعُولُوا۟ wa‑in khiftum allā tuqsiṭū l‑yatāmā fa‑inkiḥū ṭāba la‑kum mina l‑nisāʾi mathna wa‑thulātha wa‑rubāʿa fa‑in khiftum allā taʿdilū fa‑wāḥidatan aw malakat aymānukum dhālika adnā allā taʿūlū
If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.
(4:24)

وَٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتُ  مِنَ  ٱلنِّسَآءِ  إِلَّا  مَا  مَلَكَتْ  أَيْمَٰنُكُمْ  كِتَٰبَ  ٱللَّـهِ  عَلَيْكُمْ  وَأُحِلَّ  لَكُم  مَّا  وَرَآءَ  ذَٰلِكُمْ  أَن  تَبْتَغُوا۟  بِأَمْوَٰلِكُم  مُّحْصِنِينَ  غَيْرَ  مُسَٰفِحِينَ  فَمَا  ٱسْتَمْتَعْتُم  بِهِۦ  مِنْهُنَّ  فَـَٔاتُوهُنَّ  أُجُورَهُنَّ  فَرِيضَةً  وَلَا  جُنَاحَ  عَلَيْكُمْ  فِيمَا  تَرَٰضَيْتُم  بِهِۦ  مِنۢ  بَعْدِ  ٱلْفَرِيضَةِ  إِنَّ  ٱللَّـهَ  كَانَ  عَلِيمًا  حَكِيمًا wa‑l‑muḥṣanātu mina l‑nisāʾi illā malakat aymānukum kitāba allāhi ʿalaykum wa‑uḥilla la‑kum wa‑rāʾa dhālikum an tabtaghū bi‑amwālikum muḥṣinīna ghayra musāfiḥīna fa‑mā istamataʿtum bihi minhunna fa‑ātūhunna ujūrahunna farīḍatan wa‑lā junāḥa ʿalaykum fī‑mā tarāḍaytum bihi min baʿdi l‑farīḍati inna allāha kāna ʿalīman ḥakīman
Also (prohibited are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess: Thus hath Allah ordained (Prohibitions) against you: Except for these, all others are lawful, provided ye seek (them in marriage) with gifts from your property,- desiring chastity, not lust, seeing that ye derive benefit from them, give them their dowers (at least) as prescribed; but if, after a dower is prescribed, agree Mutually (to vary it), there is no blame on you, and Allah is All-knowing, All-wise.
(4:25)

وَمَن  لَّمْ  يَسْتَطِعْ  مِنكُمْ  طَوْلًا  أَن  يَنكِحَ  ٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتِ  ٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ  فَمِن  مَّا  مَلَكَتْ  أَيْمَٰنُكُم  مِّن  فَتَيَٰتِكُمُ  ٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ  وَٱللَّـهُ  أَعْلَمُ  بِإِيمَٰنِكُم  بَعْضُكُم  مِّنۢ  بَعْضٍ  فَٱنكِحُوهُنَّ  بِإِذْنِ  أَهْلِهِنَّ  وَءَاتُوهُنَّ  أُجُورَهُنَّ  بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ  مُحْصَنَٰتٍ  غَيْرَ  مُسَٰفِحَٰتٍ  وَلَا  مُتَّخِذَٰتِ  أَخْدَانٍ  فَإِذَآ  أُحْصِنَّ  فَإِنْ  أَتَيْنَ  بِفَٰحِشَةٍ  فَعَلَيْهِنَّ  نِصْفُ  مَا  عَلَى  ٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتِ  مِنَ  ٱلْعَذَابِ  ذَٰلِكَ  لِمَنْ  خَشِىَ  ٱلْعَنَتَ  مِنكُمْ  وَأَن  تَصْبِرُوا۟  خَيْرٌ  لَّكُمْ  وَٱللَّـهُ  غَفُورٌ  رَّحِيمٌ wa‑man lam yastaṭiʿ minkum ṭawlan an yankiḥa l‑muḥṣanāti l‑muʾmināti famin malakat aymānukum min fa‑tayātikumu l‑muʾmināti wallāhu aʿlamu biīmānikum baʿḍukum min baʿḍin fa‑inkiḥūhunna bi‑idhni ahlihinna wa‑ātūhunna ujūrahunna bil‑maʿrūfi muḥṣanātin ghayra musāfiḥātin wa‑lā muttakhidhāti akhdānin fa‑idhā uḥṣinna fa‑in atayna bi‑fāḥishatin faʿalayhinna niṣfu ʿalā l‑muḥṣanāti mina l‑ʿadhābi dhālika liman khashiya l‑ʿanata minkum wa‑an taṣbirū khayrun la‑kum wallāhu ghafūrun raḥīmun
If any of you have not the means wherewith to wed free believing women, they may wed believing girls from among those whom your right hands possess: And Allah hath full knowledge about your faith. Ye are one from another: Wed them with the leave of their owners, and give them their dowers, according to what is reasonable: They should be chaste, not lustful, nor taking paramours: when they are taken in wedlock, if they fall into shame, their punishment is half that for free women. This (permission) is for those among you who fear sin; but it is better for you that ye practise self-restraint. And Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
(4:36)

Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good- to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbours who are near, neighbours who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess: For Allah loveth not the arrogant, the vainglorious;-

Surah 5 al-Māʾidah (The Table Spread)
(5:17)

لَّقَدْ  كَفَرَ  ٱلَّذِينَ  قَالُوٓا۟  إِنَّ  ٱللَّـهَ  هُوَ  ٱلْمَسِيحُ  ٱبْنُ  مَرْيَمَ  قُلْ  فَمَن  يَمْلِكُ  مِنَ  ٱللَّـهِ  شَيْـًٔا  إِنْ  أَرَادَ  أَن  يُهْلِكَ  ٱلْمَسِيحَ  ٱبْنَ  مَرْيَمَ  وَأُمَّهُۥ  وَمَن  فِى  ٱلْأَرْضِ  جَمِيعًا  وَلِلَّەِ  مُلْكُ  ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ  وَٱلْأَرْضِ  وَمَا  بَيْنَهُمَا  يَخْلُقُ  مَا  يَشَآءُ  وَٱللَّـهُ  عَلَىٰ  كُلِّ  شَىْءٍ  قَدِيرٌ llaqad kafara lladhīna qālū inna allāha huwa l‑masīḥu ibnu maryama qul fa‑man yamliku mina allāhi shayʾan in arāda an yuhlika l‑masīḥa ibna maryama wa‑ummahu wa‑man l‑arḍi jamīʿan wa‑lillahi mulku l‑samāwāti wa‑l‑arḍi wa‑mā baynahumā yakhluqu yashāʾu wallāhu ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun
In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. Say: "Who then hath the least power against Allah, if His will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all every - one that is on the earth? For to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between. He createth what He pleaseth. For Allah hath power over all things."
(5:25)

He said: "O my Lord! I have power only over myself and my brother: so separate us from this rebellious people!"
(5:41)

O Messenger! let not those grieve thee, who race each other into unbelief: (whether it be) among those who say "We believe" with their lips but whose hearts have no faith; or it be among the Jews,- men who will listen to any lie,- will listen even to others who have never so much as come to thee. They change the words from their (right) times and places: they say, "If ye are given this, take it, but if not, beware!" If any one's trial is intended by Allah, thou hast no authority in the least for him against Allah. For such - it is not Allah's will to purify their hearts. For them there is disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a heavy punishment.
(5:76)

قُلْ  أَتَعْبُدُونَ  مِن  دُونِ  ٱللَّـهِ  مَا  لَا  يَمْلِكُ  لَكُمْ  ضَرًّا  وَلَا  نَفْعًا  وَٱللَّـهُ  هُوَ  ٱلسَّمِيعُ  ٱلْعَلِيمُ qul ataʿbudūna min dūni allāhi yamliku la‑kum ḍarran wa‑lā nafʿan wallāhu huwa l‑samīʿu l‑ʿalīmu
Say: "Will ye worship, besides Allah, something which hath no power either to harm or benefit you? But Allah,- He it is that heareth and knoweth all things."

Surah 7 al-Aʿrāf (The Heights)
(7:188)

قُل  لَّآ  أَمْلِكُ  لِنَفْسِى  نَفْعًا  وَلَا  ضَرًّا  إِلَّا  مَا  شَآءَ  ٱللَّـهُ  وَلَوْ  كُنتُ  أَعْلَمُ  ٱلْغَيْبَ  لَٱسْتَكْثَرْتُ  مِنَ  ٱلْخَيْرِ  وَمَا  مَسَّنِىَ  ٱلسُّوٓءُ  إِنْ  أَنَا۠  إِلَّا  نَذِيرٌ  وَبَشِيرٌ  لِّقَوْمٍ  يُؤْمِنُونَ qul amliku li‑nafsī nafʿan wa‑lā ḍarran illā shāʾa allāhu wa‑law kuntu aʿlamu l‑ghayba lastakthartu mina l‑khayri wa‑mā massaniya l‑sūʾu in anā illā nadhīrun wa‑bashīrun li‑qawmin yuʾminūna
Say: "I have no power over any good or harm to myself except as Allah willeth. If I had knowledge of the unseen, I should have multiplied all good, and no evil should have touched me: I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings to those who have faith."

Surah 10 Yūnus (Jonah)
(10:31)

قُلْ  مَن  يَرْزُقُكُم  مِّنَ  ٱلسَّمَآءِ  وَٱلْأَرْضِ  أَمَّن  يَمْلِكُ  ٱلسَّمْعَ  وَٱلْأَبْصَٰرَ  وَمَن  يُخْرِجُ  ٱلْحَىَّ  مِنَ  ٱلْمَيِّتِ  وَيُخْرِجُ  ٱلْمَيِّتَ  مِنَ  ٱلْحَىِّ  وَمَن  يُدَبِّرُ  ٱلْأَمْرَ  فَسَيَقُولُونَ  ٱللَّـهُ  فَقُلْ  أَفَلَا  تَتَّقُونَ qul man yarzuqukum mina l‑samāʾi wa‑l‑arḍi a‑man yamliku l‑samʿa wa‑l‑abṣāra wa‑man yukhriju l‑ḥayya mina l‑mayyiti wa‑yukhriju l‑mayyita mina l‑ḥayyi wa‑man yudabbiru l‑amra fa‑sa‑yaqūlūna allāhu fa‑qul a‑fa‑lā tattaqūna
Say: "Who is it that sustains you (in life) from the sky and from the earth? or who is it that has power over hearing and sight? And who is it that brings out the living from the dead and the dead from the living? and who is it that rules and regulates all affairs?" They will soon say, "Allah". Say, "will ye not then show piety (to Him)?"
(10:49)

قُل  لَّآ  أَمْلِكُ  لِنَفْسِى  ضَرًّا  وَلَا  نَفْعًا  إِلَّا  مَا  شَآءَ  ٱللَّـهُ  لِكُلِّ  أُمَّةٍ  أَجَلٌ  إِذَا  جَآءَ  أَجَلُهُمْ  فَلَا  يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ  سَاعَةً  وَلَا  يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ qul amliku li‑nafsī ḍarran wa‑lā nafʿan illā shāʾa allāhu li‑kulli ummatin ajalun idhā jāa ajaluhum fa‑lā yastaʾkhirūna sāʿatan wa‑lā yastaqdimūna
Say: "I have no power over any harm or profit to myself except as Allah willeth. To every people is a term appointed: when their term is reached, not an hour can they cause delay, nor (an hour) can they advance (it in anticipation)."

Surah 13 al-Raʿd (The Thunder)
(13:16)

قُلْ  مَن  رَّبُّ  ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ  وَٱلْأَرْضِ  قُلِ  ٱللَّـهُ  قُلْ  أَفَٱتَّخَذْتُم  مِّن  دُونِهِۦٓ  أَوْلِيَآءَ  لَا  يَمْلِكُونَ  لِأَنفُسِهِمْ  نَفْعًا  وَلَا  ضَرًّا  قُلْ  هَلْ  يَسْتَوِى  ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ  وَٱلْبَصِيرُ  أَمْ  هَلْ  تَسْتَوِى  ٱلظُّلُمَٰتُ  وَٱلنُّورُ  أَمْ  جَعَلُوا۟  لِلَّـهِ  شُرَكَآءَ  خَلَقُوا۟  كَخَلْقِهِۦ  فَتَشَٰبَهَ  ٱلْخَلْقُ  عَلَيْهِمْ  قُلِ  ٱللَّـهُ  خَٰلِقُ  كُلِّ  شَىْءٍ  وَهُوَ  ٱلْوَٰحِدُ  ٱلْقَهَّٰرُ qul man rrabbu l‑samāwāti wa‑l‑arḍi quli allāhu qul afattakhadhtum min dūnihi awliyāʾa yamlikūna li‑anfusihim nafʿan wa‑lā ḍarran qul hal yastawī l‑aʿmā wa‑l‑baṣīru am hal tastawī l‑ẓulumātu wa‑l‑nūru am jaʿalū lillāhi shurakāʾa khalaqū ka‑khalqihi fa‑tashābaha l‑khalqu ʿalayhim quli allāhu khāliqu kulli shayʾin wa‑huwa l‑wāḥidu l‑qahhāru
Say: "Who is the Lord and Sustainer of the heavens and the earth?" Say: "(It is) Allah." Say: "Do ye then take (for worship) protectors other than Him, such as have no power either for good or for harm to themselves?" Say: "Are the blind equal with those who see? Or the depths of darkness equal with light?" Or do they assign to Allah partners who have created (anything) as He has created, so that the creation seemed to them similar? Say: "Allah is the Creator of all things: He is the One, the Supreme and Irresistible."

Surah 16 al-Naḥl (The Bee)
(16:71)

Allah has bestowed His gifts of sustenance more freely on some of you than on others: those more favoured are not going to throw back their gifts to those whom their right hands possess, so as to be equal in that respect. Will they then deny the favours of Allah?
(16:73)

وَيَعْبُدُونَ  مِن  دُونِ  ٱللَّـهِ  مَا  لَا  يَمْلِكُ  لَهُمْ  رِزْقًا  مِّنَ  ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ  وَٱلْأَرْضِ  شَيْـًٔا  وَلَا  يَسْتَطِيعُونَ wa‑yaʿbudūna min dūni allāhi yamliku lahum rizqan mina l‑samāwāti wa‑l‑arḍi shayʾan wa‑lā yastaṭīʿūna
And worship others than Allah,- such as have no power of providing them, for sustenance, with anything in heavens or earth, and cannot possibly have such power?

Surah 17 al-Isrāʾ (The Children of Israel)
(17:56)

Say: "Call on those - besides Him - whom ye fancy: they have neither the power to remove your troubles from you nor to change them."
(17:100)

Say: "If ye had control of the Treasures of the Mercy of my Lord, behold, ye would keep them back, for fear of spending them: for man is (every) niggardly!"

Surah 19 Maryam (Mary)
(19:87)

None shall have the power of intercession, but such a one as has received permission (or promise) from (Allah) Most Gracious.

Surah 20 Ṭā Hā (Ta-Ha)
(20:89)

أَفَلَا  يَرَوْنَ  أَلَّا  يَرْجِعُ  إِلَيْهِمْ  قَوْلًا  وَلَا  يَمْلِكُ  لَهُمْ  ضَرًّا  وَلَا  نَفْعًا a‑fa‑lā yarawna allā yarjiʿu ilayhim qawlan wa‑lā yamliku lahum ḍarran wa‑lā nafʿan
Could they not see that it could not return them a word (for answer), and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good?

Surah 23 al-Muʾminūn (The Believers)
(23:6)

Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,

And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.
(24:33)

Let those who find not the wherewithal for marriage keep themselves chaste, until Allah gives them means out of His grace. And if any of your slaves ask for a deed in writing (to enable them to earn their freedom for a certain sum), give them such a deed if ye know any good in them: yea, give them something yourselves out of the means which Allah has given to you. But force not your maids to prostitution when they desire chastity, in order that ye may make a gain in the goods of this life. But if anyone compels them, yet, after such compulsion, is Allah, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (to them),
(24:58)

O ye who believe! let those whom your right hands possess, and the (children) among you who have not come of age ask your permission (before they come to your presence), on three occasions: before morning prayer; the while ye doff your clothes for the noonday heat; and after the late-night prayer: these are your three times of undress: outside those times it is not wrong for you or for them to move about attending to each other: Thus does Allah make clear the Signs to you: for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.

It is no fault in the blind nor in one born lame, nor in one afflicted with illness, nor in yourselves, that ye should eat in your own houses, or those of your fathers, or your mothers, or your brothers, or your sisters, or your father's brothers or your father's sisters, or your mohter's brothers, or your mother's sisters, or in houses of which the keys are in your possession, or in the house of a sincere friend of yours: there is no blame on you, whether ye eat in company or separately. But if ye enter houses, salute each other - a greeting of blessing and purity as from Allah. Thus does Allah make clear the signs to you: that ye may understand.

O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers; and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Makka) with thee; and any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her;- this only for thee, and not for the Believers (at large); We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess;- in order that there should be no difficulty for thee. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

سَيَقُولُ  لَكَ  ٱلْمُخَلَّفُونَ  مِنَ  ٱلْأَعْرَابِ  شَغَلَتْنَآ  أَمْوَٰلُنَا  وَأَهْلُونَا  فَٱسْتَغْفِرْ  لَنَا  يَقُولُونَ  بِأَلْسِنَتِهِم  مَّا  لَيْسَ  فِى  قُلُوبِهِمْ  قُلْ  فَمَن  يَمْلِكُ  لَكُم  مِّنَ  ٱللَّـهِ  شَيْـًٔا  إِنْ  أَرَادَ  بِكُمْ  ضَرًّا  أَوْ  أَرَادَ  بِكُمْ  نَفْعًۢا  بَلْ  كَانَ  ٱللَّـهُ  بِمَا  تَعْمَلُونَ  خَبِيرًۢا sa‑yaqūlu la‑ka l‑mukhallafūna mina l‑aʿrābi shaghalatnā amwālunā wa‑ahlūnā fastaghfir la‑nā yaqūlūna bi‑alsinatihim laysa qulūbihim qul fa‑man yamliku la‑kum mina allāhi shayʾan in arāda bikum ḍarran aw arāda bikum nafʿan bal kāna allāhu bi‑mā taʿmalūna khabīran
The desert Arabs who lagged behind will say to thee: "We were engaged in (looking after) our flocks and herds, and our families: do thou then ask forgiveness for us." They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say: "Who then has any power at all (to intervene) on your behalf with Allah, if His Will is to give you some loss or to give you some profit? But Allah is well acquainted with all that ye do.

There is for you an excellent example (to follow) in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people: "We are clear of you and of whatever ye worship besides Allah: we have rejected you, and there has arisen, between us and you, enmity and hatred for ever,- unless ye believe in Allah and Him alone": But not when Abraham said to his father: "I will pray for forgiveness for thee, though I have no power (to get) aught on thy behalf from Allah." (They prayed): "Our Lord! in Thee do we trust, and to Thee do we turn in repentance: to Thee is (our) Final Goal.

Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed,

Surah 72 al-Jinn (The Jinn)

Surah 82 al-Infiṭār (The Cleaving Asunder)
(82:19)

يَوْمَ  لَا  تَمْلِكُ  نَفْسٌ  لِّنَفْسٍ  شَيْـًٔا  وَٱلْأَمْرُ  يَوْمَئِذٍ  لِلَّـهِ yawma tamliku nafsun llinafsin shayʾan wa‑l‑amru yawmaʾidhin lillāhi
(It will be) the Day when no soul shall have power (to do) aught for another: For the command, that Day, will be (wholly) with Allah.
