When angels take the souls of those who die in sin against their souls, they say: "In what (plight) Were ye?" They reply: "Weak and oppressed Were we in the earth." They say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to move yourselves away (From evil)?" Such men will find their abode in Hell,- What an evil refuge! -

Surah 5 al-Māʾidah (The Table Spread)
(5:117)

Surah 6 al-Anʿām (The Cattle)
(6:60)

(6:61)

He is the irresistible, (watching) from above over His worshippers, and He sets guardians over you. At length, when death approaches one of you, Our angels take his soul, and they never fail in their duty.

Surah 7 al-Aʿrāf (The Heights)
(7:37)

Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His Signs? For such, their portion appointed must reach them from the Book (of decrees): until, when our messengers (of death) arrive and take their souls, they say: "Where are the things that ye used to invoke besides Allah?" They will reply, "They have left us in the lurch," And they will bear witness against themselves, that they had rejected Allah.

Surah 13 al-Raʿd (The Thunder)

Surah 32 al-Sajdah (The Adoration)
(32:11)

Surah 39 al-Zumar (The Companies)
(39:42)

It is Allah that takes the souls (of men) at death; and those that die not (He takes) during their sleep: those on whom He has passed the decree of death, He keeps back (from returning to life), but the rest He sends (to their bodies) for a term appointed verily in this are Signs for those who reflect.

Surah 40 al-Ghāfir (The Forgiving One)
(40:67)

هُوَ  ٱلَّذِى  خَلَقَكُم  مِّن  تُرَابٍ  ثُمَّ  مِن  نُّطْفَةٍ  ثُمَّ  مِنْ  عَلَقَةٍ  ثُمَّ  يُخْرِجُكُمْ  طِفْلًا  ثُمَّ  لِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟  أَشُدَّكُمْ  ثُمَّ  لِتَكُونُوا۟  شُيُوخًا  وَمِنكُم  مَّن  يُتَوَفَّىٰ  مِن  قَبْلُ  وَلِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟  أَجَلًا  مُّسَمًّى  وَلَعَلَّكُمْ  تَعْقِلُونَ huwa alladhī khalaqakum min turābin thumma min nuṭfatin thumma min ʿalaqatin thumma yukhrijukum ṭiflan thumma li‑tablughū ashuddakum thumma li‑takūnū shuyūkhan wa‑minkum man yutawaffā min qablu wa‑li‑tablughū ajalan musamman wa‑la‑ʿallakum taʿqilūna
It is He Who has created you from dust then from a sperm-drop, then from a leech-like clot; then does he get you out (into the light) as a child: then lets you (grow and) reach your age of full strength; then lets you become old,- though of you there are some who die before;- and lets you reach a Term appointed; in order that ye may learn wisdom.
(40:77)

But how (will it be) when the angels take their souls at death, and smite their faces and their backs?
