Sura al-Baqara 2:64

ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ فَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّـهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ لَكُنتُم مِّنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ

thumma tawallaytum min baʿdi dhālika fa-lawlā faḍlu allāhi ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatuhu lakuntum mina l-khāsirīna

But ye turned back thereafter: Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allah to you, ye had surely been among the lost.

Sura al-Baqara 2:83

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَٰقَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ لَا تَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا ٱللَّـهَ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا وَذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَٰكِينِ وَقُولُوا۟ لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنكُمْ وَأَنتُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

wa-idh akhadhnā mīthāqa banī isrāʾīla lā taʿbudūna illā allāha wa-bil-wālidayni iḥsānan wa-dhī l-qurbā wa-l-yatāmā wa-l-masākīni wa-qūlū lil-nāsi ḥusnan wa-aqīmū l-ṣalāta wa-ātū l-zakāta thumma tawallaytum illā qalīlan minkum wa-antum muʿriḍūna

And remember We took a covenant from the Children of Israel (to this effect): Worship none but Allah; treat with kindness your parents and kindred, and orphans and those in need; speak fair to the people; be steadfast in prayer; and practise regular charity. Then did ye turn back, except a few among you, and ye backslide (even now).

Sura al-Baqara 2:137

فَإِنْ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِمِثْلِ مَآ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦ فَقَدِ ٱهْتَدَوا۟ وَّإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنَّمَا هُمْ فِى شِقَاقٍ فَسَيَكْفِيكَهُمُ ٱللَّـهُ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

fa-in āmanū bi-mithli mā āmantum bihi fa-qadi ihtadaw wa-in tawallaw fa-innamā hum fī shiqāqin fa-sa-yakfīkahumu allāhu wa-huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīmu

So if they believe as ye believe, they are indeed on the right path; but if they turn back, it is they who are in schism; but Allah will suffice thee as against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Sura al-Baqara 2:205

وَإِذَا تَوَلَّىٰ سَعَىٰ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيُفْسِدَ فِيهَا وَيُهْلِكَ ٱلْحَرْثَ وَٱلنَّسْلَ وَٱللَّـهُ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْفَسَادَ

wa-idhā tawalla saʿā fī l-arḍi li-yufsida fīhā wa-yuhlika l-ḥartha wa-l-nasla wallāhu lā yuḥibbu l-fasāda

When he turns his back, His aim everywhere is to spread mischief through the earth and destroy crops and cattle. But Allah loveth not mischief.

Sura al-Baqara 2:246

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلْمَلَإِ مِنۢ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مُوسَىٰٓ إِذْ قَالُوا۟ لِنَبِىٍّ لَّهُمُ ٱبْعَثْ لَنَا مَلِكًا نُّقَٰتِلْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّـهِ قَالَ هَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْقِتَالُ أَلَّا تُقَٰتِلُوا۟ قَالُوا۟ وَمَا لَنَآ أَلَّا نُقَٰتِلَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّـهِ وَقَدْ أُخْرِجْنَا مِن دِيَٰرِنَا وَأَبْنَآئِنَا فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقِتَالُ تَوَلَّوْا۟ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنْهُمْ وَٱللَّـهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

a-lam tara ilā l-malāʾi min banī isrāʾīla min baʿdi mūsā idh qālū li-nabiyyin llahumu abʿath la-nā malikan nuqātil fī sabīli allāhi qalā hal ʿasaytum in kutiba ʿalaykumu l-qitālu allā tuqātilū qālū wa-mā lanā allā nuqātila fī sabīli allāhi wa-qad ukhrijnā min diyārinā wa-abnāʾinā fa-lammā kutiba ʿalayhimu l-qitālu tawallaw illā qalīlan minhum wallāhu ʿalīmun bil-ẓālimīna

Hast thou not Turned thy vision to the Chiefs of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Moses? they said to a prophet (That was) among them: "Appoint for us a king, that we May fight in the cause of Allah." He said: "Is it not possible, if ye were commanded to fight, that that ye will not fight?" They said: "How could we refuse to fight in the cause of Allah, seeing that we were turned out of our homes and our families?" but when they were commanded to fight, they turned back, except a small band among them. But Allah Has full knowledge of those who do wrong.

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:20

فَإِنْ حَآجُّوكَ فَقُلْ أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِىَ لِلَّـهِ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِ وَقُل لِّلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْأُمِّيِّۦنَ ءَأَسْلَمْتُمْ فَإِنْ أَسْلَمُوا۟ فَقَدِ ٱهْتَدَوا۟ وَّإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْبَلَٰغُ وَٱللَّـهُ بَصِيرٌۢ بِٱلْعِبَادِ

fa-in ḥājjūka fa-qul aslamtu wajhiya lillāhi wa-mani ittabaʿani wa-qul li-lladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wa-l-ummīyina a-aslamtum fa-in aslamū fa-qadi ihtadaw wa-in tawallaw fa-innamā ʿalayka l-balāghu wallāhu baṣīrun bil-ʿibādi

So if they dispute with thee, say: "I have submitted My whole self to Allah and so have those who follow me." And say to the People of the Book and to those who are unlearned: "Do ye (also) submit yourselves?" If they do, they are in right guidance, but if they turn back, Thy duty is to convey the Message; and in Allah's sight are (all) His servants.

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:23

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ نَصِيبًا مِّنَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَىٰ كِتَٰبِ ٱللَّـهِ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ يَتَوَلَّىٰ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُمْ وَهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

a-lam tara ilā lladhīna ūtū naṣīban mina l-kitābi yudʿawna ilā kitābi allāhi li-yaḥkuma baynahum thumma yatawalla farīqun minhum wa-hum muʿriḍūna

Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who have been given a portion of the Book? They are invited to the Book of Allah, to settle their dispute, but a party of them Turn back and decline (The arbitration).

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:32

قُلْ أَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّـهَ وَٱلرَّسُولَ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

qul aṭīʿū allāha wa-l-rasūla fa-in tawallaw fa-inna allāha lā yuḥibbu l-kāfirīna

Say: "Obey Allah and His Messenger": But if they turn back, Allah loveth not those who reject Faith.

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:63

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ

fa-in tawallaw fa-inna allāha ʿalīmun bil-mufsidīna

But if they turn back, Allah hath full knowledge of those who do mischief.

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:64

قُلْ يَٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ تَعَالَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ كَلِمَةٍ سَوَآءٍۭ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمْ أَلَّا نَعْبُدَ إِلَّا ٱللَّـهَ وَلَا نُشْرِكَ بِهِۦ شَيْـًٔا وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا أَرْبَابًا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّـهِ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقُولُوا۟ ٱشْهَدُوا۟ بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ

qul yāʾahla l-kitābi taʿālaw ilā kalimatin sawāʾin baynanā wa-baynakum allā naʿbuda illā allāha wa-lā nushrika bihi shayʾan wa-lā yattakhidha baʿḍunā baʿḍan arbāban min dūni allāhi fa-in tawallaw fa-qūlū ishhadū bi-annā muslimūna

Say: "O People of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah." If then they turn back, say ye: "Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah's Will).

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:82

فَمَن تَوَلَّىٰ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَٰسِقُونَ

fa-man tawalla baʿda dhālika fa-ūlāʾika humu l-fāsiqūna

If any turn back after this, they are perverted transgressors.

Sura Āl-ʿImrān 3:155

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا۟ مِنكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْتَقَى ٱلْجَمْعَانِ إِنَّمَا ٱسْتَزَلَّهُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ بِبَعْضِ مَا كَسَبُوا۟ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا ٱللَّـهُ عَنْهُمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ

inna lladhīna tawallaw minkum yawma iltaqā l-jamʿāni innamā istazallahumu l-shayṭānu bi-baʿḍi mā kasabū wa-la-qad ʿafā allāhu ʿanhum inna allāha ghafūrun ḥalīmun

Those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts Met,-it was Satan who caused them to fail, because of some (evil) they had done. But Allah Has blotted out (their fault): For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.

Sura al-Nisāʾ 4:80

مَّن يُطِعِ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ ٱللَّـهَ وَمَن تَوَلَّىٰ فَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًا

man yuṭiʿi l-rasūla fa-qad aṭāʿa allāha wa-man tawalla fa-mā arsalnāka ʿalayhim ḥafīẓan

He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah: But if any turn away, We have not sent thee to watch over their (evil deeds).

Sura al-Nisāʾ 4:89

وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تَكْفُرُونَ كَمَا كَفَرُوا۟ فَتَكُونُونَ سَوَآءً فَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ حَتَّىٰ يُهَاجِرُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّـهِ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَخُذُوهُمْ وَٱقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ وَلِيًّا وَلَا نَصِيرًا

waddū law takfurūna ka-mā kafarū fa-takūnūna sawāʾan fa-lā tattakhidhū minhum awliyāʾa ḥattā yuhājirū fī sabīli allāhi fa-in tawallaw fa-khudhūhum wa-aqtulūhum ḥaythu wa-jadttumūhum wa-lā tattakhidhū minhum waliyyan wa-lā naṣīran

They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks;-

Sura al-Nisāʾ 4:115

وَمَن يُشَاقِقِ ٱلرَّسُولَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَيَتَّبِعْ غَيْرَ سَبِيلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ نُوَلِّهِۦ مَا تَوَلَّىٰ وَنُصْلِهِۦ جَهَنَّمَ وَسَآءَتْ مَصِيرًا

wa-man yushāqiqi l-rasūla min baʿdi mā tabayyana lahu l-hudā wa-yattabiʿ ghayra sabīli l-muʾminīna nuwallihi mā tawalla wa-nuṣlihi jahannama wa-sāʾat maṣīran

If anyone contends with the Messenger even after guidance has been plainly conveyed to him, and follows a path other than that becoming to men of Faith, We shall leave him in the path he has chosen, and land him in Hell,- what an evil refuge!

Sura al-Māʾidah 5:43

وَكَيْفَ يُحَكِّمُونَكَ وَعِندَهُمُ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةُ فِيهَا حُكْمُ ٱللَّـهِ ثُمَّ يَتَوَلَّوْنَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَمَآ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

wa-kayfa yuḥakkimūnaka waʿindahumu l-tawratu fīhā ḥukmu allāhi thumma yatawallawna min baʿdi dhālika wa-mā ulāʾika bil-muʾminīna

But why do they come to thee for decision, when they have (their own) law before them?- therein is the (plain) command of Allah; yet even after that, they would turn away. For they are not (really) People of Faith.

Sura al-Māʾidah 5:49

وَأَنِ ٱحْكُم بَيْنَهُم بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّـهُ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ وَٱحْذَرْهُمْ أَن يَفْتِنُوكَ عَنۢ بَعْضِ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّـهُ إِلَيْكَ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَٱعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّـهُ أَن يُصِيبَهُم بِبَعْضِ ذُنُوبِهِمْ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَفَٰسِقُونَ

wa-ani aḥkum baynahum bimā anzala allāhu wa-lā tattabiʿ ahwāʾahum wa-aḥdharhum an yaftinūka ʿan baʿḍi mā anzala allāhu ilayka fa-in tawallaw fa-iʿlam annamā yurīdu allāhu an yuṣībahum bi-baʿḍi dhunūbihim wa-inna kathīran mina l-nāsi lafāsiqūna

And this (He commands): Judge thou between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, but beware of them lest they beguile thee from any of that (teaching) which Allah hath sent down to thee. And if they turn away, be assured that for some of their crime it is Allah's purpose to punish them. And truly most men are rebellious.

Sura al-Māʾidah 5:51

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ ٱلْيَهُودَ وَٱلنَّصَٰرَىٰٓ أَوْلِيَآءَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَإِنَّهُۥ مِنْهُمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

yā-ayyuhā lladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū l-yahūda wa-l-naṣāra awliyāʾa baʿḍuhum awliyāʾu baʿḍin wa-man yatawallahum minkum fa-innahu minhum inna allāha lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīna

O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.

Sura al-Māʾidah 5:56

وَمَن يَتَوَلَّ ٱللَّـهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فَإِنَّ حِزْبَ ٱللَّـهِ هُمُ ٱلْغَٰلِبُونَ

wa-man yatawalla allāha wa-rasūlahu wa-lladhīna āmanū fa-inna ḥizba allāhi humu l-ghālibūna

As to those who turn (for friendship) to Allah, His Messenger, and the (fellowship of) believers,- it is the fellowship of Allah that must certainly triumph.

Sura al-Māʾidah 5:80

تَرَىٰ كَثِيرًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتَوَلَّوْنَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَبِئْسَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لَهُمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ أَن سَخِطَ ٱللَّـهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَفِى ٱلْعَذَابِ هُمْ خَٰلِدُونَ

tara kathīran minhum yatawallawna lladhīna kafarū la-biʾsa mā qaddamat lahum anfusuhum an sakhiṭa allāhu ʿalayhim wa-fī l-ʿadhābi hum khālidūna

Thou seest many of them turning in friendship to the Unbelievers. Evil indeed are (the works) which their souls have sent forward before them (with the result), that Allah's wrath is on them, and in torment will they abide.

Sura al-Māʾidah 5:92

وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّـهَ وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَٱحْذَرُوا۟ فَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّمَا عَلَىٰ رَسُولِنَا ٱلْبَلَٰغُ ٱلْمُبِينُ

wa-aṭīʿū allāha wa-aṭīʿū l-rasūla wa-aḥdharū fa-in tawallaytum fa-iʿlamū annamā ʿalā rasūlinā l-balāghu l-mubīnu

Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and beware (of evil): if ye do turn back, know ye that it is Our Messenger's duty to proclaim (the message) in the clearest manner.

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:79

فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَالَةَ رَبِّى وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُحِبُّونَ ٱلنَّٰصِحِينَ

fa-tawallā ʿanhum wa-qāla yā-qawmi la-qad ablaghtukum risālata rabbī wa-naṣaḥtu la-kum wa-lākin lā tuḥibbūna l-nāṣiḥīna

So Salih left them, saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the message for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel, but ye love not good counsellors!"

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:93

فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَٰلَٰتِ رَبِّى وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ فَكَيْفَ ءَاسَىٰ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ كَٰفِرِينَ

fa-tawallā ʿanhum wa-qāla yā-qawmi la-qad ablaghtukum risālāti rabbī wa-naṣaḥtu la-kum fa-kayfa āsa ʿalā qawmin kāfirīna

So Shu'aib left them, saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the messages for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel, but how shall I lament over a people who refuse to believe!"

Sura al-Aʿrāf 7:196

إِنَّ وَلِۦِّىَ ٱللَّـهُ ٱلَّذِى نَزَّلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَهُوَ يَتَوَلَّى ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

inna waliyyiya allāhu alladhī nazzala l-kitāba wa-huwa yatawalla l-ṣāliḥīna

"For my Protector is Allah, Who revealed the Book (from time to time), and He will choose and befriend the righteous.

Sura al-Anfāl 8:20

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّـهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَا تَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ وَأَنتُمْ تَسْمَعُونَ

yā-ayyuhā lladhīna āmanū aṭīʿū allāha wa-rasūlahu wa-lā tawallaw ʿanhu wa-antum tasmaʿūna

O ye who believe! Obey Allah and His Messenger, and turn not away from him when ye hear (him speak).

Sura al-Anfāl 8:23

وَلَوْ عَلِمَ ٱللَّـهُ فِيهِمْ خَيْرًا لَّأَسْمَعَهُمْ وَلَوْ أَسْمَعَهُمْ لَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

wa-law ʿalima allāhu fīhim khayran llaasmaʿahum wa-law asmaʿahum latawallaw wwahum muʿriḍūna

If Allah had found in them any good. He would indeed have made them listen: (As it is), if He had made them listen, they would but have turned back and declined (Faith).

Sura al-Anfāl 8:40

وَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّـهَ مَوْلَىٰكُمْ نِعْمَ ٱلْمَوْلَىٰ وَنِعْمَ ٱلنَّصِيرُ

wa-in tawallaw fa-iʿlamū annā allāha mawlakum niʿma l-mawlā wa-niʿma l-naṣīru

If they refuse, be sure that Allah is your Protector - the best to protect and the best to help.

Sura al-Tawbah 9:3

وَأَذَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّـهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَجِّ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّـهَ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُۥ فَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ وَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّـهِ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

wa-adhānun mina allāhi wa-rasūlihi ilā l-nāsi yawma l-ḥajji l-akbari annā allāha barīʾun mina l-mushrikīna wa-rasūluhu fa-in tubtum fa-huwa khayrun la-kum wa-in tawallaytum fa-iʿlamū annakum ghayru muʿjizī allāhi wa-bashshiri lladhīna kafarū bi-ʿadhābin alīmin

And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger, to the people (assembled) on the day of the Great Pilgrimage,- that Allah and His Messenger dissolve (treaty) obligations with the Pagans. If then, ye repent, it were best for you; but if ye turn away, know ye that ye cannot frustrate Allah. And proclaim a grievous penalty to those who reject Faith.

Sura al-Tawbah 9:23

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟ ءَابَآءَكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ إِنِ ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلْكُفْرَ عَلَى ٱلْإِيمَٰنِ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ

yā-ayyuhā lladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū ābāʾakum waikhwānakum awliyāʾa ini istaḥabbū l-kufra ʿalā l-īmāni wa-man yatawallahum minkum fa-ūlāʾika humu l-ẓālimūna

O ye who believe! take not for protectors your fathers and your brothers if they love infidelity above Faith: if any of you do so, they do wrong.

Sura al-Tawbah 9:50

إِن تُصِبْكَ حَسَنَةٌ تَسُؤْهُمْ وَإِن تُصِبْكَ مُصِيبَةٌ يَقُولُوا۟ قَدْ أَخَذْنَآ أَمْرَنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَيَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُمْ فَرِحُونَ

in tuṣibka ḥasanatun tasuʾhum wa-in tuṣibka muṣībatun yaqūlū qad akhadhnā amranā min qablu wa-yatawallaw wwahum fariḥūna

If good befalls thee, it grieves them; but if a misfortune befalls thee, they say, "We took indeed our precautions beforehand," and they turn away rejoicing.

Sura al-Tawbah 9:74

يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّـهِ مَا قَالُوا۟ وَلَقَدْ قَالُوا۟ كَلِمَةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ وَكَفَرُوا۟ بَعْدَ إِسْلَٰمِهِمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِمَا لَمْ يَنَالُوا۟ وَمَا نَقَمُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ أَنْ أَغْنَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّـهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ فَإِن يَتُوبُوا۟ يَكُ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ وَإِن يَتَوَلَّوْا۟ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّـهُ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْأَخِرَةِ وَمَا لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ

yaḥlifūna billahi mā qālū wa-la-qad qālū kalimata l-kufri wa-kafarū baʿda islāmihim wa-hammū bi-mā lam yanālū wa-mā naqamū illā an aghnahumu allāhu wa-rasūluhu min faḍlihi fa-in yatūbū yaku khayran lahum wa-in yatawallaw yuʿadhdhibhumu allāhu ʿadhāban alīman fī l-dunyā wa-l-akhirati wa-mā lahum fī l-arḍi min waliyyin wa-lā naṣīrin

They swear by Allah that they said nothing (evil), but indeed they uttered blasphemy, and they did it after accepting Islam; and they meditated a plot which they were unable to carry out: this revenge of theirs was (their) only return for the bounty with which Allah and His Messenger had enriched them! If they repent, it will be best for them; but if they turn back (to their evil ways), Allah will punish them with a grievous penalty in this life and in the Hereafter: They shall have none on earth to protect or help them.

Sura al-Tawbah 9:76

فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَىٰهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِۦ بَخِلُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

fa-lammā atāhum min faḍlihi bakhilū bihi wa-tawallaw wwahum muʿriḍūna

But when He did bestow of His bounty, they became covetous, and turned back (from their covenant), averse (from its fulfilment).

Sura al-Tawbah 9:92

وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا مَآ أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ قُلْتَ لَآ أَجِدُ مَآ أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ تَوَلَّوا۟ وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ ٱلدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا أَلَّا يَجِدُوا۟ مَا يُنفِقُونَ

wa-lā ʿalā lladhīna idhā mā atawka li-taḥmilahum qulta lā ajidu mā aḥmilukum ʿalayhi tawallaw wwa-aʿyunuhum tafīḍu mina l-damʿi ḥazanan allā yajidū mā yunfiqūna

Nor (is there blame) on those who came to thee to be provided with mounts, and when thou saidst, "I can find no mounts for you," they turned back, their eyes streaming with tears of grief that they had no resources wherewith to provide the expenses.

Sura al-Tawbah 9:129

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقُلْ حَسْبِىَ ٱللَّـهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

fa-in tawallaw fa-qul ḥasbiya allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa-huwa rabbu l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīmi

But if they turn away, Say: "Allah sufficeth me: there is no god but He: On Him is my trust,- He the Lord of the Throne (of Glory) Supreme!"

Sura Yūnus 10:72

فَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَمَا سَأَلْتُكُم مِّنْ أَجْرٍ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّـهِ وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

fa-in tawallaytum fa-mā saaltukum min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā allāhi wa-umirtu an akūna mina l-muslimīna

"But if ye turn back, (consider): no reward have I asked of you: my reward is only due from Allah, and I have been commanded to be of those who submit to Allah's will (in Islam)."

Sura Hūd 11:3

وَأَنِ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يُمَتِّعْكُم مَّتَٰعًا حَسَنًا إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى وَيُؤْتِ كُلَّ ذِى فَضْلٍ فَضْلَهُۥ وَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ كَبِيرٍ

wa-ani istaghfirū rabbakum thumma tūbū ilayhi yumattiʿkum matāʿan ḥasanan ila ajalin musamman wa-yuʾti kulla dhī faḍlin faḍlahu wa-in tawallaw fa-innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin kabīrin

"(And to preach thus), 'Seek ye the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance; that He may grant you enjoyment, good (and true), for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding grace on all who abound in merit! But if ye turn away, then I fear for you the penalty of a great day:

Sura Hūd 11:52

وَيَٰقَوْمِ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا وَيَزِدْكُمْ قُوَّةً إِلَىٰ قُوَّتِكُمْ وَلَا تَتَوَلَّوْا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ

wa-yā-qawmi istaghfirū rabbakum thumma tūbū ilayhi yursili l-samāʾa ʿalaykum midrāran wa-yazidkum quwwatan ilā quwwatikum wa-lā tatawallaw mujrimīna

"And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him (in repentance): He will send you the skies pouring abundant rain, and add strength to your strength: so turn ye not back in sin!"

Sura Hūd 11:57

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُم مَّآ أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَيْكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفُ رَبِّى قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّونَهُۥ شَيْـًٔا إِنَّ رَبِّى عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ حَفِيظٌ

fa-in tawallaw fa-qad ablaghtukum mā ursiltu bihi ilaykum wa-yastakhlifu rabbī qawman ghayrakum wa-lā taḍurrūnahu shayʾan inna rabbī ʿalā kulli shayʾin ḥafīẓun

"If ye turn away,- I (at least) have conveyed the Message with which I was sent to you. My Lord will make another people to succeed you, and you will not harm Him in the least. For my Lord hath care and watch over all things."

Sura Yūsuf 12:84

وَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَٰٓأَسَفَىٰ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَٱبْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ ٱلْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ

wa-tawallā ʿanhum wa-qāla yā-asafā ʿalā yūsufa wa-ibyaḍḍat ʿaynāhu mina l-ḥuzni fa-huwa kaẓīmun

And he turned away from them, and said: "How great is my grief for Joseph!" And his eyes became white with sorrow, and he fell into silent melancholy.

Sura al-Naḥl 16:82

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْبَلَٰغُ ٱلْمُبِينُ

fa-in tawallaw fa-innamā ʿalayka l-balāghu l-mubīnu

But if they turn away, thy duty is only to preach the clear Message.

Sura al-Naḥl 16:100

إِنَّمَا سُلْطَٰنُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَوَلَّوْنَهُۥ وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِهِۦ مُشْرِكُونَ

innamā sulṭānuhu ʿalā lladhīna yatawallawnahu wa-lladhīna hum bihi mushrikūna

His authority is over those only, who take him as patron and who join partners with Allah.

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:48

إِنَّا قَدْ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْنَآ أَنَّ ٱلْعَذَابَ عَلَىٰ مَن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

innā qad ūḥiya ilaynā annā l-ʿadhāba ʿalā man kadhdhaba wa-tawallā

"'Verily it has been revealed to us that the Penalty (awaits) those who reject and turn away.'"

Sura Ṭā Hā 20:60

فَتَوَلَّىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ فَجَمَعَ كَيْدَهُۥ ثُمَّ أَتَىٰ

fa-tawallā firʿawun fa-jamaʿa kaydahu thumma ata

So Pharaoh withdrew: He concerted his plan, and then came (back).

Sura al-Anbiyāʾ 21:109

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقُلْ ءَاذَنتُكُمْ عَلَىٰ سَوَآءٍ وَإِنْ أَدْرِىٓ أَقَرِيبٌ أَم بَعِيدٌ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ

fa-in tawallaw fa-qul ādhantukum ʿalā sawāʾin wa-in adrī aqarībun am baʿīdun mā tūʿadūna

But if they turn back, Say: "I have proclaimed the Message to you all alike and in truth; but I know not whether that which ye are promised is near or far.

Sura al-Ḥajj 22:4

كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِ أَنَّهُۥ مَن تَوَلَّاهُ فَأَنَّهُۥ يُضِلُّهُۥ وَيَهْدِيهِ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ

kutiba ʿalayhi annahu man tawallāhu fa-annahu yuḍilluhu wa-yahdīhi ilā ʿadhābi l-saʿīri

About the (Evil One) it is decreed that whoever turns to him for friendship, him will he lead astray, and he will guide him to the Penalty of the Fire.

Sura al-Nūr 24:11

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ جَآءُو بِٱلْإِفْكِ عُصْبَةٌ مِّنكُمْ لَا تَحْسَبُوهُ شَرًّا لَّكُم بَلْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُم مَّا ٱكْتَسَبَ مِنَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ كِبْرَهُۥ مِنْهُمْ لَهُۥ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ

inna lladhīna jāʾū bil-ifki ʿuṣbatun minkum lā taḥsabūhu sharran llakum bal huwa khayrun la-kum li-kulli imriʾin minhum mā iktasaba mina l-ithmi wa-lladhī tawalla kibrahu minhum lahu ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmun

Those who brought forward the lie are a body among yourselves: think it not to be an evil to you; On the contrary it is good for you: to every man among them (will come the punishment) of the sin that he earned, and to him who took on himself the lead among them, will be a penalty grievous.

Sura al-Nūr 24:47

وَيَقُولُونَ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّـهِ وَبِٱلرَّسُولِ وَأَطَعْنَا ثُمَّ يَتَوَلَّىٰ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَمَآ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

wa-yaqūlūna āmannā billāhi wa-bil-rasūli wa-aṭaʿnā thumma yatawalla farīqun minhum min baʿdi dhālika wa-mā ulāʾika bil-muʾminīna

They say, "We believe in Allah and in the messenger, and we obey": but even after that, some of them turn away: they are not (really) Believers.

Sura al-Nūr 24:54

قُلْ أَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّـهَ وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْهِ مَا حُمِّلَ وَعَلَيْكُم مَّا حُمِّلْتُمْ وَإِن تُطِيعُوهُ تَهْتَدُوا۟ وَمَا عَلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ إِلَّا ٱلْبَلَٰغُ ٱلْمُبِينُ

qul aṭīʿū allāha wa-aṭīʿū l-rasūla fa-in tawallaw fa-innamā ʿalayhi mā ḥummila wa-ʿalaykum mā ḥummiltum wa-in tuṭīʿūhu tahtadū wa-mā ʿalā l-rasūli illā l-balāghu l-mubīnu

Say: "Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger: but if ye turn away, he is only responsible for the duty placed on him and ye for that placed on you. If ye obey him, ye shall be on right guidance. The Messenger's duty is only to preach the clear (Message).

Sura al-Naml 27:28

ٱذْهَب بِّكِتَٰبِى هَٰذَا فَأَلْقِهْ إِلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَٱنظُرْ مَاذَا يَرْجِعُونَ

idhhab bi-kitābī hādhā fa-alqih ilayhim thumma tawalla ʿanhum fa-anẓur mādhā yarjiʿūna

"Go thou, with this letter of mine, and deliver it to them: then draw back from them, and (wait to) see what answer they return"...

Sura al-Qaṣaṣ 28:24

فَسَقَىٰ لَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَوَلَّىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلظِّلِّ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى لِمَآ أَنزَلْتَ إِلَىَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ

fasaqa lahumā thumma tawalla ilā l-ẓilli fa-qāla rabbi innī limā anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqīrun

So he watered (their flocks) for them; then he turned back to the shade, and said:"O my Lord! truly am I in (desperate) need of any good that Thou dost send me!"
