Surah 2 al-Baqara (The Cow)
RefArabic    TransliterationTranslation
(2:19)

أَوْ  كَصَيِّبٍ  مِّنَ  ٱلسَّمَآءِ  فِيهِ  ظُلُمَٰتٌ  وَرَعْدٌ  وَبَرْقٌ  يَجْعَلُونَ  أَصَٰبِعَهُمْ  فِىٓ  ءَاذَانِهِم  مِّنَ  ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِ  حَذَرَ  ٱلْمَوْتِ  وَٱللَّـهُ  مُحِيطٌۢ  بِٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ aw kaṣayyibin mina l‑samāʾi fīhi ẓulumātun wa‑raʿdun wa‑barqun yajʿalūna aṣābiʿahum ādhānihim mina l‑ṣawāʿiqi ḥadhara l‑mawti wallāhu muḥīṭun bil‑kāfirīna
Or (another similitude) is that of a rain-laden cloud from the sky: In it are zones of darkness, and thunder and lightning: They press their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap, the while they are in terror of death. But Allah is ever round the rejecters of Faith!

Surah 4 al-Nisāʾ (The Women)
(4:119)

وَلَأُضِلَّنَّهُمْ  وَلَأُمَنِّيَنَّهُمْ  وَلَءَامُرَنَّهُمْ  فَلَيُبَتِّكُنَّ  ءَاذَانَ  ٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ  وَلَءَامُرَنَّهُمْ  فَلَيُغَيِّرُنَّ  خَلْقَ  ٱللَّـهِ  وَمَن  يَتَّخِذِ  ٱلشَّيْطَٰنَ  وَلِيًّا  مِّن  دُونِ  ٱللَّـهِ  فَقَدْ  خَسِرَ  خُسْرَانًا  مُّبِينًا wa‑la‑uḍillannahum wa‑la‑umanniyannahum wa‑la‑āmurannahum fa‑la‑yubattikunna ādhāna l‑anʿāmi wa‑la‑āmurannahum fa‑la‑yughayyirunna khalqa allāhi wa‑man yattakhidhi l‑shayṭāna waliyyan min dūni allāhi fa‑qad khasira khusrānan mubīnan
"I will mislead them, and I will create in them false desires; I will order them to slit the ears of cattle, and to deface the (fair) nature created by Allah." Whoever, forsaking Allah, takes satan for a friend, hath of a surety suffered a loss that is manifest.

Surah 5 al-Māʾidah (The Table Spread)
(5:110)

إِذْ  قَالَ  ٱللَّـهُ  يَٰعِيسَى  ٱبْنَ  مَرْيَمَ  ٱذْكُرْ  نِعْمَتِى  عَلَيْكَ  وَعَلَىٰ  وَٰلِدَتِكَ  إِذْ  أَيَّدتُّكَ  بِرُوحِ  ٱلْقُدُسِ  تُكَلِّمُ  ٱلنَّاسَ  فِى  ٱلْمَهْدِ  وَكَهْلًا  وَإِذْ  عَلَّمْتُكَ  ٱلْكِتَٰبَ  وَٱلْحِكْمَةَ  وَٱلتَّوْرَىٰةَ  وَٱلْإِنجِيلَ  وَإِذْ  تَخْلُقُ  مِنَ  ٱلطِّينِ  كَهَيْـَٔةِ  ٱلطَّيْرِ  بِإِذْنِى  فَتَنفُخُ  فِيهَا  فَتَكُونُ  طَيْرًۢا  بِإِذْنِى  وَتُبْرِئُ  ٱلْأَكْمَهَ  وَٱلْأَبْرَصَ  بِإِذْنِى  وَإِذْ  تُخْرِجُ  ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ  بِإِذْنِى  وَإِذْ  كَفَفْتُ  بَنِىٓ  إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ  عَنكَ  إِذْ  جِئْتَهُم  بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ  فَقَالَ  ٱلَّذِينَ  كَفَرُوا۟  مِنْهُمْ  إِنْ  هَٰذَآ  إِلَّا  سِحْرٌ  مُّبِينٌ idh qalā allāhu yā‑ʿīsā ibna maryama adhkur niʿmatī ʿalayka wa‑ʿalā wālidatika idh ayyadttuka bi‑rūḥi l‑qudusi tukallimu l‑nāsa l‑mahdi wa‑kahlan wa‑idh ʿallamtuka l‑kitāba wa‑l‑ḥikmata wa‑l‑tawrata wa‑l‑injīla wa‑idh takhluqu mina l‑ṭīni kahayati l‑ṭayri bi‑idhnī fa‑tanfukhu fīhā fa‑takūnu ṭayran bi‑idhnī wa‑tubriʾu l‑akmaha wa‑l‑abraṣa bi‑idhnī wa‑idh tukhriju l‑mawtā bi‑idhnī wa‑idh kafaftu banī isrāʾīla ʿanka idh jiʾtahum bil‑bayyināti fa‑qāla lladhīna kafarū minhum in hādhā illā siḥrun mubīnun
Then will Allah say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favour to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I strengthened thee with the holy spirit, so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel and behold! thou makest out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and thou breathest into it and it becometh a bird by My leave, and thou healest those born blind, and the lepers, by My leave. And behold! thou bringest forth the dead by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) thee when thou didst show them the clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them said: 'This is nothing but evident magic.'

Surah 6 al-Anʿām (The Cattle)
(6:25)

وَمِنْهُم  مَّن  يَسْتَمِعُ  إِلَيْكَ  وَجَعَلْنَا  عَلَىٰ  قُلُوبِهِمْ  أَكِنَّةً  أَن  يَفْقَهُوهُ  وَفِىٓ  ءَاذَانِهِمْ  وَقْرًا  وَإِن  يَرَوْا۟  كُلَّ  ءَايَةٍ  لَّا  يُؤْمِنُوا۟  بِهَا  حَتَّىٰٓ  إِذَا  جَآءُوكَ  يُجَٰدِلُونَكَ  يَقُولُ  ٱلَّذِينَ  كَفَرُوٓا۟  إِنْ  هَٰذَآ  إِلَّآ  أَسَٰطِيرُ  ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ wa‑minhum man yastamiʿu ilayka wa‑jaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wa‑fī ādhānihim waqran wa‑in yaraw kulla āyatin yuʾminū bihā ḥatta idhā jāʾūka yujādilūnaka yaqūlu lladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā asāṭīru l‑awwalīna
Of them there are some who (pretend to) listen to thee; but We have thrown veils on their hearts, So they understand it not, and deafness in their ears; if they saw every one of the signs, not they will believe in them; in so much that when they come to thee, they (but) dispute with thee; the Unbelievers say: "These are nothing but tales of the ancients."

Surah 7 al-Aʿrāf (The Heights)
(7:179)

وَلَقَدْ  ذَرَأْنَا  لِجَهَنَّمَ  كَثِيرًا  مِّنَ  ٱلْجِنِّ  وَٱلْإِنسِ  لَهُمْ  قُلُوبٌ  لَّا  يَفْقَهُونَ  بِهَا  وَلَهُمْ  أَعْيُنٌ  لَّا  يُبْصِرُونَ  بِهَا  وَلَهُمْ  ءَاذَانٌ  لَّا  يَسْمَعُونَ  بِهَآ  أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ  كَٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ  بَلْ  هُمْ  أَضَلُّ  أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ  هُمُ  ٱلْغَٰفِلُونَ wa‑la‑qad dharanā li‑jahannama kathīran mina l‑jinni wa‑l‑insi lahum qulūbun yafqahūna bihā wa‑lahum aʿyunun yubṣirūna bihā wa‑lahum ādhānun yasmaʿūna bihā ulāʾika ka‑l‑anʿāmi bal hum aḍallu ulāʾika humu l‑ghāfilūna
Many are the Jinns and men we have made for Hell: They have hearts wherewith they understand not, eyes wherewith they see not, and ears wherewith they hear not. They are like cattle,- nay more misguided: for they are heedless (of warning).
(7:195)

أَلَهُمْ  أَرْجُلٌ  يَمْشُونَ  بِهَآ  أَمْ  لَهُمْ  أَيْدٍ  يَبْطِشُونَ  بِهَآ  أَمْ  لَهُمْ  أَعْيُنٌ  يُبْصِرُونَ  بِهَآ  أَمْ  لَهُمْ  ءَاذَانٌ  يَسْمَعُونَ  بِهَا  قُلِ  ٱدْعُوا۟  شُرَكَآءَكُمْ  ثُمَّ  كِيدُونِ  فَلَا  تُنظِرُونِ alahum arjulun yamshūna bihā am lahum aydin yabṭishūna bihā am lahum aʿyunun yubṣirūna bihā am lahum ādhānun yasmaʿūna bihā quli idʿū shurakāʾakum thumma kīdūni fa‑lā tunẓirūni
Have they feet to walk with? Or hands to lay hold with? Or eyes to see with? Or ears to hear with? Say: "Call your 'god-partners', scheme (your worst) against me, and give me no respite!

Surah 17 al-Isrāʾ (The Children of Israel)
(17:46)

وَجَعَلْنَا  عَلَىٰ  قُلُوبِهِمْ  أَكِنَّةً  أَن  يَفْقَهُوهُ  وَفِىٓ  ءَاذَانِهِمْ  وَقْرًا  وَإِذَا  ذَكَرْتَ  رَبَّكَ  فِى  ٱلْقُرْءَانِ  وَحْدَهُۥ  وَلَّوْا۟  عَلَىٰٓ  أَدْبَٰرِهِمْ  نُفُورًا wa‑jaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wa‑fī ādhānihim waqran wa‑idhā dhakarta rabbaka l‑qurʾāni waḥdahu wallaw ʿala adbārihim nufūran
And We put coverings over their hearts (and minds) lest they should understand the Qur'an, and deafness into their ears: when thou dost commemorate thy Lord and Him alone in the Qur'an, they turn on their backs, fleeing (from the Truth).

Surah 18 al-Kahf (The Cave)
(18:11)

Then We draw (a veil) over their ears, for a number of years, in the Cave, (so that they heard not):
(18:57)

وَمَنْ  أَظْلَمُ  مِمَّن  ذُكِّرَ  بِـَٔايَٰتِ  رَبِّهِۦ  فَأَعْرَضَ  عَنْهَا  وَنَسِىَ  مَا  قَدَّمَتْ  يَدَاهُ  إِنَّا  جَعَلْنَا  عَلَىٰ  قُلُوبِهِمْ  أَكِنَّةً  أَن  يَفْقَهُوهُ  وَفِىٓ  ءَاذَانِهِمْ  وَقْرًا  وَإِن  تَدْعُهُمْ  إِلَى  ٱلْهُدَىٰ  فَلَن  يَهْتَدُوٓا۟  إِذًا  أَبَدًا wa‑man aẓlamu mimman dhukkira bi‑āyāti rabbihi fa‑aʿraḍa ʿanhā wa‑nasiya qaddamat yadāhu innā jaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wa‑fī ādhānihim waqran wa‑in tadʿuhum ilā l‑hudā fa‑lan yahtadū idhan abadan
And who doth more wrong than one who is reminded of the Signs of his Lord, but turns away from them, forgetting the (deeds) which his hands have sent forth? Verily We have set veils over their hearts lest they should understand this, and over their ears, deafness, if thou callest them to guidance, even then will they never accept guidance.

Surah 22 al-Ḥajj (The Pilgrimage)
(22:46)

أَفَلَمْ  يَسِيرُوا۟  فِى  ٱلْأَرْضِ  فَتَكُونَ  لَهُمْ  قُلُوبٌ  يَعْقِلُونَ  بِهَآ  أَوْ  ءَاذَانٌ  يَسْمَعُونَ  بِهَا  فَإِنَّهَا  لَا  تَعْمَى  ٱلْأَبْصَٰرُ  وَلَٰكِن  تَعْمَى  ٱلْقُلُوبُ  ٱلَّتِى  فِى  ٱلصُّدُورِ a‑fa‑lam yasīrū l‑arḍi fa‑takūna lahum qulūbun yaʿqilūna bihā aw ādhānun yasmaʿūna bihā fainnahā taʿma l‑abṣāru wa‑lākin taʿma l‑qulūbu allatī l‑ṣudūri
Do they not travel through the land, so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear? Truly it is not their eyes that are blind, but their hearts which are in their breasts.

Surah 41 Fuṣṣilat (Revelations Well Expounded)
(41:5)

وَقَالُوا۟  قُلُوبُنَا  فِىٓ  أَكِنَّةٍ  مِّمَّا  تَدْعُونَآ  إِلَيْهِ  وَفِىٓ  ءَاذَانِنَا  وَقْرٌ  وَمِنۢ  بَيْنِنَا  وَبَيْنِكَ  حِجَابٌ  فَٱعْمَلْ  إِنَّنَا  عَٰمِلُونَ wa‑qālū qulūbunā akinnatin mimmā tadʿūnā ilayhi wa‑fī ādhāninā waqrun wa‑min bayninā wa‑baynika ḥijābun fa‑iʿmal innanā ʿāmilūna
They say: "Our hearts are under veils, (concealed) from that to which thou dost invite us, and in our ears in a deafness, and between us and thee is a screen: so do thou (what thou wilt); for us, we shall do (what we will!)"
(41:44)

وَلَوْ  جَعَلْنَٰهُ  قُرْءَانًا  أَعْجَمِيًّا  لَّقَالُوا۟  لَوْلَا  فُصِّلَتْ  ءَايَٰتُهُۥٓ  ءَا۬عْجَمِىٌّ  وَعَرَبِىٌّ  قُلْ  هُوَ  لِلَّذِينَ  ءَامَنُوا۟  هُدًى  وَشِفَآءٌ  وَٱلَّذِينَ  لَا  يُؤْمِنُونَ  فِىٓ  ءَاذَانِهِمْ  وَقْرٌ  وَهُوَ  عَلَيْهِمْ  عَمًى  أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ  يُنَادَوْنَ  مِن  مَّكَانٍۭ  بَعِيدٍ wa‑law jaʿalnāhu qurʾānan aʿjamiyyan llaqālū lawlā fuṣṣilat āyātuhu aʿjamiyyun wa‑ʿarabiyyun qul huwa li‑lladhīna āmanū hudan wa‑shifāʾun wa‑lladhīna yuʾminūna ādhānihim waqrun wa‑huwa ʿalayhim ʿaman ulāʾika yunādawna min makānin baʿīdin
Had We sent this as a Qur'an (in the language) other than Arabic, they would have said: "Why are not its verses explained in detail? What! (a Book) not in Arabic and (a Messenger an Arab?" Say: "It is a Guide and a Healing to those who believe; and for those who believe not, there is a deafness in their ears, and it is blindness in their (eyes): They are (as it were) being called from a place far distant!"

Surah 71 Nūḥ (Noah)
(71:7)

"And every time I have called to them, that Thou mightest forgive them, they have (only) thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, grown obstinate, and given themselves up to arrogance.
